Repair advice needed
on: September 12, 2020, 09:09:37 PM
Hi people. I have a CK pocket knife I bought in 1973 in the UK. I used it for 10 years or more. But the loop came detatched and I am at a loss as I don't know how these things go together. I was thinking that this might be a rivet within a hollow rivet. So drill out the old one and replace. Any advice would be welcome. Here is a couple of pictures of my old knife>

Can we have a look at the other side of the bail/loop and see how it's attached?  My first thought is it might be possible to thin out the bail a touch and then re-peen the brass pin.

I don't think that's a hollow rivet, more likely a solid rivet with washers. Gareth's idea might work but I don't know how strong that would be. You would have to be careful not to over pean and tighten up that pivot too much as to make it a nail breaker.

As said, I too think Gareth's idea may work, given if you are really careful not not thin out the bail too much and there's enough material/rivet to hold the knife together.

Another approach I'd suggest to find the same diameter pin to punch out the old pin, then just re-peen both sides.  For preventing it being too tight, I'd recommend check all the tools every (few) taps, and start slow.  Alternate the chassis often when peening, and always use a anvil on the other side when peening.
