Hi folks, just got my FX in hand and found the springs on all layers to be lighter than my other Alox knives. Has there been a change to the Alox line or is this only an artifact of this model? It’s not big deal and they aren’t weak or anything, just not as strong a pull as the others. Overall though love this knife! It’s not the brick I was anticipating, greatly relieved and surprised how comfortable it is in hand.
I’ve also noticed that the springs on 93mm knives I’ve purchased more recently seem not quite as stiff as some of my older 93mm knives. However, I don’t have the means to quantitatively evaluate this.I certainly agree that the springs are not too weak, and also that the Farmer X is a great tool!
When i got my PX's it was a nice surprise that the springs are more "finger nail friendly" than my first standard Pioneer, that one was a nail breaker when new, and it's still a bit stiffer than the PX
I do like the slight difference in tension, especially the scissor layer. My PX scissors are so stiff I can’t open them without first opening just enough to get the tip of my finger under, then opening the rest of the way by pinching them and pulling. Same with the awl. I usually open the awl halfway and then push the rest of the way open. With the lighter spring I’m less likely to cut myself doing this as I usually do in colder weather.
