Used the OHT to open a new pack of calibration traps (not much else doing  ::) )

Day 5 of 30

Tried out the combo blade today  ::) If you know me you know I dislike combo blades  :D

It will sharpen a pencil but not as easily as a PE blade would have ;)

Couple glamor shots of the tool and a close up of the combo blade

Day 5

Wetols attended chilli cooking duty today, it did alright for the cutting job(handle is not the most comfortable to hold tight to), but fail miserably at opening the can.  The lip of the can is too tall for the opener to punctuate, and I end up have to resort to my trusted SAK for the job.  The chilli was tasty nonetheless, and that's all that really matter. :D

Day 5

(Image removed from quote.)
Your sweets photo have reminded me that I have been eating a fair amount of ice-cream this summer, and I might need to get fit soon again.

Created a hook on the end of a steel wire to help grab a wire in the ceiling that was out of my reach:

(Image removed from quote.)
Great use!

Day 5

Used the can opener’s “sharp” edge, (sharp in inverted commas as it’s quite blunt), to open package with an old slide lock Hunter in it. Will have to try to open an actual can before the month’s out.
Quite like the little serrated edge on the tool but not sure what you’d use it for, cutting cord maybe

The Hunter isn’t in bad nick apart from the scales and was fairly cheap, like a slide lock and fancied a Hunter, might replace the scales if I can get the Hunter specific ones but no biggie. Needs a really good clean though

(Image removed from quote.)
Since it is the Hunter model, I looked it up on Sakwiki and it seems to be used for 'gutting'.  But I would agree for non-hunting use, probably cutting fabric would be well within its capability.

Day 4, some of the finds I opened up today.

A lot of these are castings that lasted in some form up through about 2000 or so.

Matchbox had a Bomag roller, Atlas Excavator, and Faun heavy dump truck. But, by the late 1980s, they'd lost their licensed badging and became generic. These three castings were introduced when MBX was still being made in England, and were shuffled around. The Atlas was recently modified, and was still being used as recently as a couple of years ago. Faun lost its metal bed in favor of a plastic one about 2008, and then the pivoting bed was replaced with a fixed plastic water tank a few years ago. The Bomag was retired in the early 2000s. This Bomag is made in England, so it's an early one.

HW released some very nicely done Caterpillar models in the early 1980s (along with a Grove crane and Oshkosh P-15 ARFF airport fire truck) that are miles ahead of Matchbox. I think mine is one of the first releases, as the CAT badge and "777B" the model number is cast in, which got removed in all subsequent releases.  It's also all metal, while the MBX Faun had a plastic chassis--its' metal on the HW.

The D-10N  has rubber treads and friction sleeve hydraulic cylinders. Beats the heck out of MBX's D9 they had at the time. Ironically, after Mattel bought MBX, some of these HW castings (including the 777B) were released as Matchbox in about 1999-2000 or so.

I had a CAT branded Tinker Small that was period correct to these CATs; but I gave it away to a friend of mine who operated CAT equipment for more than 30 years in the coal mining industry. I am guessing a dealer had ordered these, as I haven't seen another. The CAT logo was inlaid, and was the old style "CATERPILLAR" logo before the simple "CAT" with the triangle became common.

(Image removed from quote.)
That's a cool collection.  Since my little guy in house has taken a keen interest in anything that moves, I did have a decent Tomica collection ongoing now.  Surprisingly, the brand even made a lot of animal or mini figures, and even cartoon cars from Disney movie Cars as well.

It reminds of the multi-purpose tool on the Aitor pocket knives.

From this angle, the OHT seems to have a funky blade shape?  Kinda like a prolonged tanto tip? :pok:

I am still waiting for the a-ha moment to really adopt serrated blade over plain edge for me.  I remembered when I first started the 'knife hobby', I brought into the whole "serrated blade could cut even when dull" urban myth, and collected a few of them.  But ever since I found out SE is such a pita to sharpen and how easy it is with PE, I never looked back. :D

You mean this one? :pok:   I think the thickness of the tool is too thick for it to be viewed as a 'blade' but more like a saw, but then the saw tooth is so wide apart and few in between, I bet it may be difficult to saw anything with it easily.  I have this tool somewhere, and ought to give that a try sometime after this challenge...

I had to dig into my can opener thread for this. I remember it performing adequately.
Here's my post of it. It did alright. Not that comfortable, and not perfectly consistent tracing along the rim, but it was fine.

Show content
Bibury 21 in 1
(Image removed from quote.)

A locking quarter-circle, properly positioned to hook on the rim.
Initial piercing was extremely easy. Comfort took a small hit, due to some sharp edges, but nothing we have not seen even with premium multi-tools.
The Phillips screwdriver tip acted as a stop, preventing the can opener from sinking in too deep in the lid. As the cutting edge made a cut, the screwdriver tip will meet the lid, signifying that the cutting edge has ran out and it is time to advance to the next cut. This unintentional feature lends itself to cutting consistently, every cut being equal in length.

While tracing around the lid is easy, sometimes the rim will bend and you will not be able to continue on a previous cut. It was necessary to pierce ahead and then connect the two cuts. Nothing time consuming or difficult, just an extra little step to get the can opened, if you happen to bend the rim.
The lid was not pushed in the can, and it did not create any shrapnel. Some sharp points were left behind, but otherwise a quick, easy job, with some minor discomfort, no slipping and no jamming. Not a bad choice at all, which is refreshing to see in a budget multi-tool that went with the quarter-circle.

(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)

2 points for punching through.
1 for comfort.
2 for not jamming.
1 for cutting.
2 for not slipping.
Total: 8

Day 05
I said yesterday that the combo edge blade needed a touchup and I did something I never do.  I used the carbide blade eaters on my SOG keychain tool.  Normally I would use my Spyderco Sharpmaker with ceramic rods or I would use Arkansas wet stones and I would really take my time and give it my attention, but the Gerber MP600 just has an industrial look and feel that makes me think it is made to be abused and eventually replaced, so who cares if you touch up the blade with a carbide pull through sharpener.  Anyway, it is sharp now.  I will use a diamond coated sharpening rod to get the serrated portion later.

I bought it over the counter on my high street so I doubt it has anything other than the standard blade

I got it just after it was released in the UK (2015 ish?) Did they ever change them  :dunno:

Here's another recent shot of it for your perusal (maybe it's just the angle of dangle  )

That could have more than one meaning.
:iagree: with Fireman I thought refilling those was Fisher's job

I thought the same thing, but just decided to leave it.  Although I will say, if I (or having Fisher) ever get to the point of “refilling” bags in that sense, I am in a desperate place.  I know “single-use” isn’t popular nowadays but some things really should only be used once.

Cutting role or cord looks like what it would be best for, but usually for that a sharp plain edge is better than serrations :dunno:

I can’t really see it being useful as a saw, unless it was intended to be used in a swivel (up-down motion) instead of push-pull, but if it doesn’t lock the up motion could be dangerous.

I don't believe I will have an aha moment :D I prefer plain edge over serrated (serrated blades definitely have their place with certain tasks though :salute: ) but a PE blade overall will be the most practical for me  :tu: A combo edge is (in most cases) the worst scenario for me  :dwts:  :D

I know there are some better designs of the combo blade out there but I still prefer PE :woohoo:

Day 5

Pried out the very tight inline Phillips to disassemble a box fan for cleaning.

It's also a lot shorter than the 91mm Vic inline Phillips I'm used to - the one paired with the gray-frame mag glass.

Could have used a real screwdriver, but in the spirit of the challenge...

Also used the nail file as a letter opener and used my hook blade mod to the can opener to rip open packing tape on a box.

SAKs:
58mm: Bijou (3), Classic SD (7), Mini Champ Plus (mod), Alox Classic SD, Rambler (3), Companion
65mm: Wenger Esquire
74mm: Executive (2)
85mm: Traveler, Delemont S10, Bass
91mm: Champion "c", Swiss Champ (4), Explorer (3), Deluxe Tinker, Huntsman, Serrated Spartan/Weekender, Explorer Plus, Deluxe Explorer Plus (mod), Outdoorsman Plus, Champion "a", Champion Plus, Timekeeper Alarm, Golfer
93mm: Pioneer Alox
