Decide the fate of my SwissChamp!
on: June 16, 2022, 10:49:36 PM
I really need to cull my herd. One "victim" of culling will be my SwissChamp. However, I'm not sure what to do with it.

Option one: pass it along to someone else. It's a relatively recent model, so replacing it won't be a problem. I'm sure someone would be happy to have a lightly used SwissChamp at a pretty good discount over a brand-new one.

Option two: take it apart. I've been wanting to make my own Passenger, and possibly a Mechanic, and the SwissChamp could provide needed pieces. The metal saw and scaler would find their way into mods destined for other members (eventually).

The poll runs for two weeks. What say ye?

It it were mine & I had the skills I'd split it in two: say a Spartan/Climber/Camper/whatever plus a set of lesser used tools. I've long wanted to do this as an entire SC is an awkward handful when I use the outside layers of blades & openers. I don't like to be without a SC close at hand but of its toolset the Spartan one is by far my most used & I carry another knife for it simply for carrying and handling comfort.

PS: For casual carry a Spartan or similar goes into a pocket while the SC lives in my bag.

Create a bladeless compliment for your traditional/fixed blades. Keep the tools you want/need the most, trade/donate the ones you don't want.

As an enabler, I should remind you that you probably don't need to cull the herd.

As a greedy SC lover, I say sell it...if not to Barry, to me.  ;)

I've got a couple SAKs sitting around in pieces that I've never finished.  What seemed like a great idea got lost in whatever SAKs I got next.

You've already narrowed it down to two very good options.
Now put it into the kitchen drawer until you can narrow it down to one  :pok:

...or pass it along, you don't need another SAK  :D

Personally I'd mod it, as you can still buy SCs everywhere... but gifting it might still be the nicer thing to do, or selling it if you have no-one sufficiently deserving.

Another option is to mod it to someone else's ideal, and then gift it to that person....!!

I think you should keep it as is.  Stick it in a drawer or in your bag until you need it.  If that absolutely can't happen, then I think you should mod it into the SAK of your dreams.  As long as you are really making something that doesn't already exist.  I see no point or advantage to converting a Swiss Champ into a Ranger, for example, when you can still buy a Ranger.

I would only tear it apart to add more tools. Smaller SAKs are already available.

:iagree:
Remove the blade layer, the saw, and maybe the awl, and you’ll create (in theory) a TSA- acceptable Swiss Army Knifeless.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

Easy! Take it apart, then pass it along. That's the MTo way!

The monkey wrench has been thrown! That's a possibility I hadn't considered: that I'd have a disassembled SAK, or parts thereof, laying around for an extended period of time.

You don't need another SAK.
100% correct! I'm overloaded as it is. But I sure did want a green Alox Bantam. Out of pure FOMO, I made that one happen.

As long as you are really making something that doesn't already exist.
I would add to that models that are difficult to find and/or tend to be expensive.

Easy! Take it apart, then pass it along. That's the MTo way!
If I do take it apart, at least two of its components will find their way to MTo members.

I say take it apart! The passenger is one of my grail Saks and I want an original but I have been tempted to do one many times and thought about getting a champ and making one and then do a bladeless tool out of the leftover parts to keep at its side

And if you don't need the pliers I would be happy to buy them from you

Come on you awl!!
The answer is a simple one...
Take it apart.
Then put it back together exactly the way it was.
Then pass it along  :D
