Two weeks ago I've had my first try at a self made sheath. A pocket caddy for the back pockets of my jeans.

I've added a tiny slot in the middle for a SAK scale tool too. I have a Tortoise Firefly in there for now, but any scale tool would fit.

The stitching part hurt the most  ;)
It's not perfect but sturdy and reliable.



Yeah, I could have chosen a slightly thinner material maybe to make things easier  :D



Tools used: Scalpel set, thick needle, fork (to mark the stich pattern...saw that trick in one of Steves posts), Spirit X awl (slightly modified to make it pointier), some thread I found in the missus stiching kit (took 8 threads a time), a plaster for one of my fingers  :dunno:

I liked it very much and it carries nicely for me.
So earlier this week then I,ve made another caddy in the same style. This time for the Wave.



...LM Wave & 1 AA/14500 Flashlight...



What I've not shown before is this nice feature.
The clip can be left on the flashlight, it fits right into the gap of the pocket sides  :tu:

And the middle part where the SAK scale tool rests provides enough flexibility for the caddy to be carried in the back pocket  :D





To test the design I've made some paper models before...



... and used staples that I could remove afterwards...



Still, because the thick leather doesn't bent as easy as the thin paper does I had to add some to the overall size.

I couldn't manage any cleaner cutting  :P

Sturdy is what I could manage to do.
I'll leave my fingers off the delicate things for now  :P

that is a good job well done.
an old school friend of mine was catherine tates partner and the father of her daughter. haven't seen him since school but he was a top man, you could not meet a nicer bloke.

Pretty good start! You did well, trying the design with some paper models first. It helps to visualize the end result and correct mistakes before they're made.

A few suggestions: you can stitch the T&T slot in the middle, so they don't fall awl the way in and become hard to get out. Use some sand paper in the edges, so they get straighter. You can then burnish them with some soap or wax and a piece of wood or plastic.

You can try using contact glue in the edges, pressing them together and sanding them afterwards. Never actually tried it, better use a small piece to test it. Get some small piece of scrap leather and stitch it together to test this.

While looking through the rest of the leather I've tried to tear up the edge of a scrap piece and didn't manage that at all  :o This is a nice quality leather  :tu:
I'm pretty sure now that I can leave it as is.... like I've planned initially. I was going for that simple and rough style on purpose.

Still, In curious about how to seal leather edges properly  :P

I've seen lots of videos showing the two parts being glued together before stithing and then sanded off and burnished.

Never done that, It would be hard to punch stitching holes through the dry glue (at least, I think it would). I don't have a burnishing tool, either. I think you can tell that by the look of the edges in the pieces I showed you.
