ID & Rarity
on: November 30, 2020, 03:45:04 AM
Hi, this is my first post here. I am a long time knife collector and have a 'few' SAK's. It is now time for this aged collector to pass along most of my knives so i am wanting to know the desirability of a few that i have.
First is a neat Wenger with scissors and nail clippers that actually work.
Second a 3 5/8" Alox Wenger. Is this a "Soldier" ? rarish or common ?
Third is plastic handle 3 1/4", 3 blade with pick & tweezers. Master blade is very tin and has a rounded end. It works very well for slicing tomatoes and salami and it spreads peanut butter much more easily than a stiff clip blade. Are these the intended uses for this blade ? What is the name for this pattern ? Rare ? Value ?
Thank you for this help.

my pictures are rejected as too big ?? I'm no good with computers so i don't know how to make them smaller. I have posted these pics on AAPK without a problem: https://allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=20319&start=360

I think that’s a My First Victorinox Plus, same as Lumberjack but rounded blade

:iagree: Your other is a Wenger Standard Issue, and the green scaled one looks like a SwissBianco Harvester.

Hi Kootenay,

I'm also a member over on AAPK so I replied to your post over there.  I only addressed your Alox SAKs, however, since I don't have any specific information on your others.

If you are downsizing your collection, I suggest you list them on the sales corner here on MTO.  I think you'd likely find knowledgeable and receptive buyers here.

Good luck

Myron

Most of those models were/are fairly common.  Though, obviously, they will not be making any more Wenger-branded knives since Wenger was bought out by Victorinox.

The one exception that jumps out at me is that what others have referred to as a Harvester is actually a Castaway, an unusual model featuring two main blades (among other tools).  I'll happily accept correction from someone more knowledgeable, but I don't believe more than perhaps 400-500 Castaways were made.  Since they were offered in various colors, only a percentage of that total would be the "Apocalypse Green" like yours. When they came out around five or six years ago, I think selling price was $120 from SwissBianco. I would expect they have appreciated, but don't feel qualified to hazard a guess at value/auction selling price.

Holy smokes, Nate, I totally missed this!   I have just corrected the record over on AAPK too.  I would've said that the Castaway had a marlin spike implement, but I am not an expert in the Swiss Bianco tools.  Anyway, thanks for the proof-read!

Can I also just say, WTF on a SAK with two main blades?  I mean, if one were serrated I could see it, but two identical plain-edged blades?  Seems like a weird model to me....

The metal scaled nail-clipper model looks pretty nice

I got a little excited as i though the mark on the scales was a silver hall-mark - But looked a bit closer and it said WENGER - So I guess steel scales
Still nice though!

And yes even though its weird the green zombie Bianco will be worth a penny or two - Well at least folk pay a lot for them
- Whether they are worth it is another matter !!    >:D

You're correct.  I, in turn, was fixated on the two main blades and overlooked the fact that this knife had the reamer rather than the marlin spike, which makes it a Carver rather than a Castaway.  Still a fairly rare knife, though not quite as rare as the Castaway.  The Apocalypse Green Carver originally sold for $66 when it came out in 2013...

Teamwork for the win!

Haha, thanks for the über-correction, Nate!   I'm done over on AAPK -- I've replied, corrected, and edited up til now, trying to help the OP, but they don't even know MTO exists.   So whatever.

Anyway, a "carver," huh? -- I guess this is another example of why I don't own any SB SAKs.

Wow !
I have never learned so much about knives in such a short, concise form. Thank you all for your posts/links and interesting discussion on some details.
I used to have a few of the green Alox knife but gave them to friends. Everybody i know has at least 1 knife from me.
I did have about 200 ? SAK's with some fine older Wengers but i sent them off to be ebayed and they did not do well at all. Other collectors got good deals so that's o.k. Wish i had known of this forum before selling off as i had some 'interesting' older ones (1960 & newer ?).
I have a few more i would like to post but snowing now so no picture taking.
Thanks for your great help.

I see a few pics but the Apocalypse Green Carver doesn´t show here.

I also think two plain main blades are weird. But then there´s the +B Carver SW.

Two large blades are certainly unusual for a SAK, but are found on a number of traditional slip joints, including the folding hunter, trapper, muskrat, and moose.
