Oh.....I do love me a SAK.

There are so many SAKs to choose from. I suspect that SAKs are like potato chips: you can't have just one.

Every occasion...every event....every day.....seems to demand a new SAK. I have a SAK for hiking, one for camping, one for going to the market, one for going fishing, one for a car trip, one for a motorcycle trip, and one for lying in bed awl day (Compact). It seems I could change SAKs faster than I could change socks..... Cadet...Executive....Fieldmaster....Deluxe Tinker....Classic....

If you were to chose just one SAK...one SAK for awl occasions....the one SAK to take to the beach for the day or the South Pole for a couple of months....which SAK would you choose?

For me this is a tough question.....but.....I think....I'd chose the Huntsman. There...I said it. The Huntsman is not my most carried, maybe not my most favorite,....but...."push come to shove" it might be the Huntsman that is my "Go to" SAK. (It is the SAK I have stashed in my "Bugout Bag".)

So...what is your "One SAK"?

I'll second that buddy, if only because that was the one multitool I carried for 32 years.  I never needed anything else, and if I did, it was in my toolbox.  In those days, I was all over the place in (namely) air cooled Volkswagens.  I could do most everything that didn't involve much detail with my Huntsman and my Muir Idiot Manual :D  I love carrying my other knives, but it would probably be a Huntsman that I would go back to.  The second choice would be the Swisschamp.  I don't use that many tools 99 percent of the time, but I love that big beast of a knife.

Farmer X or Huntsman for me

Like you Nix, I carry different SAKs on different days/times, usually 2 in fact as always have a manager or rambler on my keychain. Depends where I’m going or what I’m doing, could be compact or climber, bantam or cadet, PX or FX, Pioneer or Farmer

Sometimes 3, bantam or cadet in wallet and a bigger one in my bag, maybe the rucksack I’m going to use in the 111mm challenge.

But if it comes down to one (which if I read your post again it’s supposed to), then between FX and huntsman. If I’m allowed my keychain manager then FX, if not probably like you the huntsman…or the FX :ahhh too hard

The second choice would be the Swisschamp.

I recently ordered a second....let's call it a 'back-up'...SwissChamp. Once upon a time...I thought the SwissChamp was just too big, now....I love it.  The SwissChamp has more tools than I absolutely need, but it makes for a great all-around tool.  :tu:

The FX is a brilliant SAK. I have a Syph-made version and a stock FX. Both are great. But......nod to the T&T and the corkscrew with mini-driver...and a pin!...hence the Huntsman.  :dunno:

That's quite a few questions there, Nix.  The title itself conjures up several different choices for me.  But sticking to the question in the OP... the one SAK for awl occasions...

I'd have to say the Huntsman.

In the running - I'd line up the Huntsman, SwissChamp, and the Farmer X because they have a scissors and the saw - for the town and the outskirts.  I'll eliminate the 111mm line due to portability (for now).

The Farmer X would cover awl I need for the outdoors (with the 93mm blade), and includes the scissors for in town.. but I'll have to deduct points for the lack of tweezers and a corkscrew.

Between the Huntsman and the SwissChamp, it's a matter of portability over contingencies.  If I was going to have to choose one of them... being that I am in town more than out on an adventure, the portability of the Huntsman would be more important than the extra tools on the SC (which would come in handy more on a trip into a town with creature comforts instead of the woods)

There’d have to be a law against only being allowed to carry one SAK, Geneva Convention surely states that would be considered a cruel and unusual punishment or something wouldn’t it :ahhh

I have a long and public history with the Huntsman. I have tried a gazillion other pocket knives and tools, but I always end up back at the scissors-with-saw patterns. Right now it's a Farmer X.

Sort of related: I recently picked up the Huntsman analogue from  Ruike (the Criterion Collection M42.) It's an excellent tool. I'll probably be spending more time with it now and then.

Of the saks I currently own, if forced down to one, I’d grab my Hercules. With that being said, I’d opt up to a Work Champ.

ONLY 1?!? ???  But...the best SAK is situation dependent. :ahhh

Now that I’ve said that, I’ll play.

Does the Spirit count??  If so that is my SAK for awl occasions.  I especially say that because after carrying various SAKs, I’ve realized that if based on toolset, the situation would call for 5+ layers, then I’m more likely going to just grab the Spirit.  As much as I love my Yeoman for edc and think it meets my daily needs most of the time, the Spirit is capable of so much more that might come up and carries so easy for its toolset.

If the question was... If I  had to pick one SAK to survive in a post-apocalyptic world  (similar to a thread that was started a few months ago) I'd choose a Hercules.  I usually don't need the machinery repair tools like pliers or Phillips drivers... But if I had to tinker with abandoned things or wanted a locking blade for harder use, I'd go with the Hercules

Nice!

Sure, the Spirit counts.

For me....a Huntsman gets carried more often.....much, much more often than the awesomely impressive Spirit X.

Or the ranger, another great choice, too many layers?

Been very tempted by the hercules but then think might as well step up to the work champ, 111mm challenge coming next month

I was tempted to say the Ranger, but feel similar to what you say of the Hercules.  If I need all the tools in the Ranger, I just step up to the Spirit or Champion.

I've only had a Ranger for a short while......but it is a great SAK.  Too many layers?   I don't think so, but the Huntsman is just a bit easier to carry. I note that one can find a Huntsman everywhere, whereas the Ranger is a bit less ubiquitous. Not that that popularity means much, but it might indicate a degree of 'carryability'.   :dunno:

I dream of a Deluxe Pioneer X :dd:

For me that would be the Handyman. I am surprised at myself as I write this given that I never actually carry mine. But as a still sensibly sized all-rounder for outdoor conditions (as described in the OP), the Handyman is hard to beat. The Ranger is even better size-wise, but if you are travelling with any kind of equipment I believe you will want the additional pliers.

As to the Huntsman, it's hardly smaller than the Ranger, so I would take the extra metal saw/file any day if I were really headed for the great outdoors.

With all that said, given that I am a city slicker my realistic "one and only" SAK would be the CT34, of course.

:tu:  true

it’s been on the list for ages Simon, when I originally bought my first huntsman some time ago I was deciding between the two but decided on the slightly lighter weight and thought I could always use my LM wave if I needed a file.

Been extremely happy with the huntsman but problem with that logic is I’m unlikely to have both the wave and huntsman on me at the same time.
Back to this scenario, I can see the ranger being the better choice, now if they only made an alox version …
