It's an interesting toolset indeed. I really like the idea of a 91 mm SAK without a large blade. This opens up a lot of possibilities.

It's weird that everyone talks about whether or not you need the opener layer and nobody talks about whether you actually need the large blade.

Here :0) I made this metal toothpick which has the eyeglass screwdriver at the tip and now resides in this knife
Wish someone would machine these at a reasonable price they are great if you want the Philips instead of the corkscrew and wear glasses

I’d love a 108mm style multi tool that fitted in there - saw/ opener/nail file but I’m trying to think if anything else could work in that space too. I might try to fettle a giant 91mm orange peeler (a la the executive) from a knackered old 2.4mm blade I have

Cool tool set. Do you use it as an EDC? If so, alone or in a combo with another knife?

I have noticed that I use the large blade almost exclusively for preparing food;  for almost all other cutting jobs I use the small blade.

Thanks FB

My full time edc is a keychain Manager which takes care of pretty much everything in my usual day-to-day but if I’m going to need tougher tools or a better file then this or a Sportsman would come with me...I do just like tinkering with  configurations though so next week I may have a new favourite. Always got the Manager though, love it .  :tu:

For one thing, obviously there are current production SAKs made with and without the opener layer.  However, to the best of my knowledge, there are no current production 91mm SAKs made without the large blade, so discussion of whether or not it is needed is moot for anything except mods.

For another, folks who don't want the large blade may be simply gravitating toward smaller (than 91mm) SAKs, rather than ruminating about whether the large blade is necessary on a 91mm SAK.

Fair enough. It's just that Helvetica Bold's creation made me realize that it seems to be possible to squeeze a small blade into other layers. And that in turn made me realize I would actually much prefer a Compact with a full opener layer and a second layer with scissors and small blade

20 is Reamer. Awl/punch and Reamer are two different activities. Awl is for making a hole, reamer is for cleaning or widening a hole.

It's the sharp edge on the side that makes it a reamer. It would be possible to have an awl that is only sharp on the end....

I definitely  wanted everything else to be in the 91mm frame for this. The small blade is sufficient for pretty much everything I need day to day and the small blade is very unthreatening for an EDC for a area like the UK so works well on those fronts. I like a large blade but also like 2 layers so was interested to see what the possibilities were. Quite extensive it appears  ;)

Just a--NOVEL--idea, but since you live in England, I suggest maybe you name it after one of the many colorful characters in Charles Dickens' novels....

One comes to mind... Daniel Doyce....he was an engineer who came up with an invention....

Cool mod!  I’m curious about how well the knife and metal saw clear each other.

Also, two more tools could be easily added using vintage parts. The scraper type wire stripper in the cap lifter. And the can key.

Cutting open the 3rd slot on a plus scale could add one more...like a Firefly.

Might have to build one myself! 23 tools in two layers.

Good suggestions kamakiri!

I'm trying to come up with some more ideas. And failing :(

Maybe a ruler on the metal saw? Or use the electronic scales from a Traveller.

Do it, that would be quite some toolkit in 2 layers!

It’s a squeeze but they do fit but you have to do some tinkering of course because the saw blade is thinner than the big blade by .3mm. I put a spacer behind the blade (so not the scale side) and it brings it just clear enough to shut. It might rub when opening over time as it is close but can’t feel anything to drastic at the moment. I’ll keep an eye on the small blade and see if it starts to scratch. There is probably a way you could give it a tad more clearance but I’m not that clever or patient

This should be a new thread...how many too can you get in 2 layers. Mine would be a nice even 10 per layer but yours an amazing 11.5!!! Maybe that in fact...a ‘max average tools per layer’ competition?

What a lovely mod and great idea!  Big fan of small blade and metal file here, and this really does save one layer of space.

Do you need more than one blade layer spacer to host the metal file?(just saw your later post, and I see what you did with the small blade spacer.  I'm thinking maybe by double stacking two blade layer spacer and add a spacer next to the scale on file side to separate the file and small blade even further?  But nonetheless, a marvelous mod and would love to do one similar someday)
