Free Series Awl vs Surge / Rebar Awl

I needed to make some holes on a 5 gal bucket once, and it was much faster to do it with the Rebar instead of the Free P4.

What’s your experience?

Although I do not have a Free series tool, I did used the small SD from an MP600 which has the same flat tip as the Free's. Did not worked as good for my purposes. I do like the Leatherman's as its also a needle, quite versatile; my favorite is in fact the Victorinox (from the regular/cellidor/nylon series).

If they hadn't tried to make the Free series awl a screwdriver as well  I am sure it would be a great awl  but since it is a screwdriver then it isn't anywhere as good as the Rebar or Surges awl ;) :D

My Free P4 awl surprisingly punched right through a leather belt while I was on vacation. You wouldn’t think that it would with the screwdriver tip, but it went through with ease.

Regardless of what Leatherman says, it is a screwdriver, NOT an awl. I rarely have to drill holes in leather, but wood/drywall/plastics/rubber--constantly.

That being said, I was in a pinch and needed to start a screw with a PST II, which for those who don't know, does NOT have an awl, as that place is taken up by the scissors. The extra-small screwdriver worked, and did no damage to the tool.
