First 93mm mod
on: January 30, 2021, 10:25:11 AM
As the title says, here's my first 93mm mod trying to replicate the Master Craftsman toolset:
- large and small (Electrician) blades
- metal and wood saws
- Phillips
- scissors
- awl
- openers

Besides the Phillips/dual openers described elsewhere, the only modification required was to shave a few mm from a blade spacer and a liner to act as a saw rest (the saw is on a blade backspring opposite the awl).
There's a lot of room in there, only just not enough to store a Quattro. However I managed to keep a pair of tweezers in the openers layer.

I had to shuffle things around a lot (pivot mods are great for this) but I eventually managed to have all nail nicks accessible (although I'm still trying to open the scissors from the other side... I may have to replace them with 91mm ones ).
After trying countersunk screws, I eventually settled for button heads. Here are a few shots of the mod in its final form (so far).

Yeah, I don't really get "slim" 93mm, they don't feel right to me :dunno: I had a Pioneer X and I never used it, because it felt too beefy for so few tools (it ended up as part of this mod). If I'm going to carry that kind of bulk, I might as well have a full complement of tools.
Although to be honest I did make a Pioneer with the parts left over from this mod. Oh well...

Great looking tool set on this one :tu:

How much does it weight? And how do you plan on carrying it? I don't see a keyring attachment so no suspension clip. Holster carry?

It's just shy of 150g. Indeed I didn't put a keyring attachment, with me they always find a way to... be in the way. I'm looking for a case to hold it with a small pair of pliers. However, the two shapes don't combine easily to make a snug package

I'd pair it with a Leatherman Mini, each of them in their separate holster. Jo scratcing of the scales and probably a much better carry. Look at AA flashlight holsters, they are about the right size for the 93mm SAKs.

Very nice, I know at some point I used to hold rank at the widest alox mod, idk if I still did but I think you definitely took it from me! Nice job!

Thanks, but I wasn't aiming for any kind of record. Anyway, I knew of at least one much wider mod before I began (7 layers including wide pliers) because that's what convinced me that a 6-layer alox was feasible...
And you've got old cross scales and brass liners, that counts double. And Soldier openers as well.

I figured, there’s a couple members out there with a few [w…i…d…e] custom alox ones, idk if yours takes the role as the widest but it’s got to be up there, we should open a subject and have everyone post there custom alox to see!
As for mine, yeah it’s an oldie, funny thing was I bought it off of Amazon for like $28, it was listed as a odd alox and it had pics of a normal pioneer, “but” it also had one pic of it red and with the old cross, as if someone at home took it, so I took a gamble and like three days later I got it, it was red, cool, but then I flipped it over and the old cross was on it and I was like  I sooo couldn’t believe it, brand new, it still had original oil on it! few months later I found another used one on eBay totally crappy but I wanted the liners and well I had it custom made into what you see, I’m guessing your saying the soldier openers as the extra big can/bottle openers?

You shouldn't write this kind of sentence here, someone could notice and start posting "that's what she said" memes

Yes, I like the angular/unpolished can and bottle openers, but I couldn't justify taking apart a Soldier when I already had perfectly good openers available.

Now now! Lol,, you cropping it and reposting it doesn't make it any better! At least if you read the whole line you don’t totally focus on that one part..

I soo would have ordered more after knowing they were red and the old cross, but by the time I got mine whoever was selling them was sold out, I was so mad!

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.

I have now solved my Quattro problem: a little drilling and milling, a small magnet and a drop of glue and here it is: one more nail nick to hurt my fingers!

How about cutting one of the corners, making it a triangular Tres, instead? Make a paper model to see if it works, take out the one you'd use the least. Or cut it in half, for a couple of Dois.
