New here, looking to get a new alox SAK
on: February 10, 2021, 09:20:02 PM
Hi, first post and thanks for the add.

I'm a 60 year old physician and I usually EDC either my Super Tinker or my Cadet along with a Knipex Cobra XS or 125.  I very much favor this approach over a plier-based multitool.  In fact, I only have 2 Leathermans, a Micra (no pliers) and a 2000 PST I received as a gift ( which is seldom used, in near mint condition with mint leather case, box and papers, but this is a story for another forum).  My other SAK is a Classic SD which fights with the Micra for keychain time lol.

I would like to get an alox SAK of about the same size as my Cadet / Super Tinker with a somewhat greater assortment of tools than the Cadet but without going overboard.
I would need a 2.5-3ish inch blade, canopener/ small flat bit, caplifter/wirestripper/ large flat bit, and an actual 3D Phillips (basically a Cadet with a Phillips?)  Nice to have would be a scissors and a nail file but ok if absent because my Classic SD or Micra  is always on my keys.

So please help me choose that special Alox SAK to pair with my Knipex Cobra pliers and I'll be very grateful.

Thanks again for the add.

Bryan

Welcome to MTO, Bryan! Before the deluge of advice appears, have you had a look on the SAK Wiki? That will give you an idea of what has been available in the alox line over the years, but in the sub-93mm category there is a smaller selection of knives available these days - I can’t think of one which will readily meet your requirements (I’m sure others will help with that!) but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the alox mini champ which sits on my key ring..... welcome again to MTO!

Welcome Bryan!

Sadly, I'm afraid you won't find a stock Alox model with a 3D Phillips.

There are a number of options and things to consider, however:
  • Mod/custom SAK that adds 3D Phillips to Cadet
  • The small flat driver on the can opener tool does an excellent job on Phillips screws, with the only real weakness being inability to access deeply recessed screws
  • Modify Cadet nail file tip to better fit Phillips screws
  • If you're willing to consider cellidor instead of Alox, look at the Explorer or Cyber Tool S
  • If you're willing to give up the can opener function for improved ability to tackle recessed Phillips screws, modify the can opener on the Cadet or look for a discontinued Technician

Welcome aboard Bryan, unfortunately they don’t make anything off the shelf with what your after in a Alox, on the good side if you find the right person out there they do mod them and the tool that your after kinda sounds like mine, only thing is mines a full length 93mm alox unlike the shorter 84mm cadet,,

Welcome to MTo, we're all mad here.

I'd second the recommendation to check out SAKwiki.  It will give you an idea of the constraints that you're choosing within if you get a stock model.  Many of these universal truths have made it into the memories of the folks that frequent this forum, but to list them all... I'd miss some.  As examples though...
- Alox never has back tools
- there is no Alox with a Phillips
- there's no 84mm with scissors
- the file on Alox is only present on an 84mm model

On the right side you'll see that you can click in a particular size and see all the models they have.  On the page with the 84mm Cadet, you can see the others on the graphic at the bottom of the page.  https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+84mm

The other common size that Alox comes in is 93mm.
https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Victorinox+93mm

Now for my meandering advice.  Since you already have a Cadet,  you'll want a 93mm.  To increase the capabilities above what you carry, the next logical way to go is a Pioneer X or Farmer X, if you would like a saw.

IMHO,  stick with the Super Tinker.  I'm a long retired dr. also. Have carried a Tinker as my EDC for about 30 years. I did super glue a section of one of my wife's metal nail files to the back scales of the Tinker.

I love this tool!  Can you tell me what SAK it originated from?  I might have to do something similar for my first Alox.

Idk, I’m not good with the little things that point out what turns it into something else, all I know is it was red with the old cross which got my attn, then I noticed after I got it that it had the huge lifter and opener with the brushed finish which made my day even better, the only other tools on it were the giant knife and an awl, the only other key point was that the separators and pins were brass.
As much as I should have just kept it that way I wanted to also build my ultimate sak, the saw on that is old even though it’s like new because my grandfather kept very good condition of his tools, that and he prob never used it, but it was his sak that he introduced me to the world of knives, so there’s a piece of him that will always be with it, the same on another knife, my first sak he gave me, I broke the corkscrew off when I was young, I again had it fixed with his sak, so my retired first sak is fixed and has a piece of him with it, I also had his scales glued to a piece of wood, because he engraved our last name into his, so it sits besides me with all my other knives by the bed,
