Lunch fail
on: March 22, 2021, 05:52:16 PM
One of the nice things about working outside is eating outside, especially now that the weather is getting warmer!

I decided today was going to be the day I started cooking my lunch outside, and along came my Biolite setup with the grille for barbecuing.  Luckily I work in construction, so there is a lot of scrap wood kicking around, and I had a pretty steady supply of twigs.

Despite not being used, or even charged in well over a year, the Biolite fired up in no time, and I assembled the grill and flopped a few hot dogs on it.

All was going well.... at first.

Once the hot dogs started to smell enticing enough, the uneven rock struck, and my whole lunch when down.   :ahhh

I think I need to pick up a teeny folding table for the Jeep, but other than the total catastrophic failure, everything went perfectly!  :P

Nope.

I flung them into the woods for the coyotes and raccoons then donated some money to McDonald's for lunch.

I thought about only posting the good photos to make it seem triumphant, but there's nothing funny about that!

No 10 second rule in play?

With the heat generated by the stove, it sat there for a lot more than 10 seconds before I could grab it!   :ahhh

I think Biolite claims that the temperature inside the cyclone is something like 1400 degrees C.  Not something you want to grab with your bare hands!

I had better results today, largely due to a cheapo folding patio table.  In fact, it was so successful that I even fed a couple of guys on site, and one of the dump truck drivers likes the setup so much that he wants one to keep in his four wheeler.

Thats great.  When I used to work on construction sites there were a few guys who cooked on site.  They'd break out their Coleman and cook away.  It was always great to see them sitting around the stove.  They made simple things but still a hot meal is nice.

Another successful hot dog day today.  And no, I didn't eat them all.  I had one and a half, Eddie the dog had a half and a random dump truck driver ate the other one.  :D

And he wants a stove of his own now.  That's two I have sold to dump truck drivers now!  I hope I get a commission!

Not bad.  Sure beats a fast food lunch.  With the heat this stover generates I bet a WOK stir fry would be possible as well

I wouldn't be surprised. I use it mostly on low power and it is plenty hot.  I rarely feel the need to turn it on high.

The lunch possibilities.  Kebabs, burgers, fish, stir fry, and a whole heck of a lot more.  An hour lunch is now a tail gate party.

I often wish I had the full sized Basecamp model, bit if I'm honest, this small setup is more than enough for my lunchtime needs at least.  And, enough for most of out adventures.

I'd maybe get the big one to keep with the camper, but even then I don't know how much need I'd actually have for it.

:o I never knew anything like that existed until now. If I understand correctly, that is a portable wood burning stove with a grill attachment. Right?

I love this forum for all of the interesting things I have learned/discovered and for the interesting people who converse here. But this place makes me want to buy stuff and that is unhealthy for my wallet  :D

Yes, it is... but it is also so much more than that.  There is a small battery powered fan that forces air into the combustion chamber, causing the wood to burn at extremely high temperatures.  Some of that heat is used to cook your lunch, the rest is used to generate electricity that recharges the internal battery and then provides energy to recharge any USB powered device, like a phone, tablet, GPS, flashlight etc.

The stove itself can be used like any other stove, to boil water or fry food.  There are attachments, like this grill and a coffee maker that add to it's versatility.

https://ca.bioliteenergy.com/collections#campstove-family

The stoves are not cheap, especially when compared to some of the pocket rocket style stoves that you can get for $20 or so, but, as they recharge your equipment and use fuel that is available almost anywhere, I consider the BioLite stoves to be exceptional value- and I have the original, least efficient model.   :ahhh

Yeah, it is a bit heavier than many stoves as well, as it has it's own battery pack and fan motor attachment, but you don't have to worry about carrying naptha, white gas, alcohol, propane, butane, isopropane etc, which means you don't have to worry about running out of fuel, or any punctures that cause that fuel to leak all over your other equipment/clothing.
