I guess it depends on the size of the paperclip, but couldn't you just squeeze and fold the wire together and use it like you would paper?

I always got a kick out of slapping bottles open on the edges of counters, but it really mars things up

Honestly I love the flat openers like your first pic more than anything, but if I have a bottle to open I usually have either a leatherman or a SAK on me and whatever opener I have is good enough. FWIW I also like the skeletool carabiner opener a lot.
