This is the episode where he made tea. He had a tiny trad and a Victorinox Trekker with him as well.

Well now I'm trying to hunt down this show since I've watched every survivorman like 3 times in the last year

I think 2020 was the global equivalent of  "Dude, you're Screwed."

I'm just catching up on all your reports now. Well done everyone and it looks like much fun was had by all.  :hatsoff:

I intended participating in this challenge but I'm having issues with (not) being paid lately and was busy over the weekend anyway but I will have a go at it one day...

Sorry to hear you having trouble  :-\

I think he was including the pint of Stout he drank, but wasn't listed in his ration,...and then tried doing maths. That's my best guess.   :dunno:

Hevy, you take care ! I'm playing catchup with the posts over the last 2 days !

ok, chow day wrapup - I was working and didn't take as many pics as i thought i did; - chow in a bag with brukit which i didn't use
(Image removed from quote.)

so, brekkie was ok, i'd eat it again but use a lot less honey, the flap jack was fine though.
(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)

Lunch (chilli rice) was good I'd eat it again, had the rice cakes post main course with coffee
(Image removed from quote.)

Dinner was the pasta
(Image removed from quote.)

and the cooking setup -
(Image removed from quote.)

I ate everything except the graze flapjack so I consumed about 2700 calories, which is more then i burned during the 24 hours, i do need to work on my portion control.

Dinner was a pasta added what i thought was the right amount of water and ended up with pasta soup but i was hungry and i ate it, i washed dinner down with coffee and the packet of smokehouse nuts and veggies, very good but very calorific
Thanks Eamo! Vaccine scheduled here!

Nice MRE!

I remember watching some silly TV programme where they drop survival experts in the middle of nowhere with only a few items and they must survive for a few days. There was a British (RAF?) guy who managed to somehow make tea one morning and he explained that it was great for morale to be able to do things like that that you would normally do back in the real world.
This is the episode where he made tea. He had a tiny trad and a Victorinox Trekker with him as well.

I actually have never watched this show, but have it saved to a watchlist.  I guess it is time to start

I remember an episode with Matt Graham, he didn't just survive the required number of days, he was actually living comfortably off the land and didn't seem to need rescuing.

I did watch a fair amount of 'survival' shows back in the days, and Matt Graham is definitely one of the few legit characters on the topic.  IIRC, he lived primitively for a long time by himself even way before he begun the shows, so some of those 'survival' scenario is probably like hanging in his usual dwellings.

Matt Graham is great. The others in Dude, you're screwed fully acknowledge that Matt does not need any "contraband" items to make it through.

When packing my GSMRE I had a choice of the Anchovies or a can of Chicken of the Sea Mediterranean style sardines.  I chose the anchovies and they turned out to be excellent with the ramen noodles.  Today I had the Mediterranean style sardines. I wanted to report on those.  Nice large portions of sardines, not at all mushy and what made them Med style was they were packed with some olive slices and pepper flakes.  I thought they were very good.  I don't eat these canned fish all that often but I plan to buy more of both of these to have them around for emergency rations, or just to occasionally have something different. I'm looking forward to the holiday edition of the challenge which I can only imagine might involve putting together the same contents with the addition of a Christmas tree scented air freshener and a candy cane.

 :iagree:
Those were my exact thoughts regarding the sardine can I had in my GSMRE. I liked them so much I got a bunch more, just to have around for a nice snack, or even to pack for an outing.

Curious to see the Holiday MRE rules.

I had great fun reading through everyone's GSMRE status reports.

I had opted to sit on the sideline and watch, because my daily food intake is very irregular, depending on where I am and what I'm doing that day.  A few days I'll eat three square meals, but usually, I won't.  Most days I will eat one meal in the early evening and have a snack later.

I kept my eyes peeled for camping and backpacking ideas, but also for the Get Home Bag in my car.  For the longest time, I kept water and a bunch of meal replacement bars.  The bars have long outlived their meaningful existence, without ever being consumed.  The thought of having to tap into my GHB for sustenance is very real to me, as I have needed to do so twice.... before I ever had a GHB   One such time found me eating a box of gas station chicken wings on Christmas Eve some years ago.

Based on awl of your experiences, I think I would feel most nourished with an actual MRE, rather than my own creation - I think one of the things that kept it interesting was the little odd and ends to everyone's meals... something I don't normally plan for myself.  I'll be getting a couple for my car, just in case.

As for backpacking, I'm going to take a page out of Nix's dinner menu, and to Nix, I'll offer a tip.  I've been known to buy those Thai Chili Tuna packets in bulk, and for what does feel like a balanced meal while giving you the stomach to get all your calories in, I combine a tuna packet with a packet of some sort of grain... Seeds of Change quinoa & brown rice is a good one.  It's almost necessary with any Indian curry, it's like the flavor and heaviness in the sauce is taking the carbohydrate accompaniment into account.  I've seen that chickpea curry at the store but never picked it up... and you can bet your doughnuts that I will.

Looking at the amount of food required for the challenge, and for real-life deployment, I wouldn't have made it past breakfast for this challenge.  But it was certainly a good learning experience and great fun to follow.

Nice assessment 11B.  :tu:

A standard camping meal for me is a packet of Tuna mixed with some instant ramen. I am going to experiment more with other grains.

A go-to meal for camping for me is freeze dried beans and instant rice. I mix 'em up in a bag for a single serving and add some chili powder, taco seasoning, or 'curry powder' ( if needed, sometimes seasoned beans are available in bulk from a local health food store. ). Rice and beans provides a full complement of essential amino acids (proteins) and keeps me going  (if you know what I mean... )!

I recently found some instant* rice/quinoa/beans in a single serving portion. Knorr is stealing my ideas!

* Add water; boil for 10 minutes.

It is a one-serving portion, but it feels big enough to share with Mrs Nix.   :tu:

Hello Nix! Sorry for late reply

We are still quarantining away from each other, counting the hours, but despite the phisical distance, we are well. (Missing a lot my little boy).
Family is ok. I was very worried, but now everything is calm.

Vitor is anxious to eat all delicacies together ( Watching Star Wars " the Bad Batch")
