The recipe is something I have been using for the past 10 or 12 years. Generally I simmer it until it reduces some and thickens up. I found that low sodium soy sauce makes a better flavor, some hoisens are better than others, and I now use a syrup blend called Golden Eagle syrup which includes honey.
