I went into Staples for one thing, and came out with a different thing. When I saw a whole section full of ring lights designed for cell phones, I thought to myself this could be a good way to shine light using the cell phone. I bought one. Here are my test photos and the rig I ended up with.
I went with the cheapest 10" ring light I could find, which was a Staples branded kit. It also had the shorter telescoping stand as I envision holding it instead of doing selfies. There is a removable goose neck cell phone holder that fits inside the ring. Several other models had the phone sitting on top of the ring. Inside the ring ensures better even lighting. The USB powered cord has a control pod half way down the 6 foot long cord. You can control the intensity of the light as well as 3 balances.

You can see the tale tell ring on shiny surfaces.

The lighting is very nice however when not getting direct blast back.

Overall, I am quite happy with this USB powered ring light.
