Key ring magnetized?
on: September 12, 2021, 03:18:24 AM
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a new thing with Victorinox?

My new Compact has a magnetized key ring, or something. It won’t dangle, but kind of stays put in all positions. It’s highly annoying. If it’s a new thing, please stop, Victorinox. It’s not tight, by the way. Moves freely, but not.

I haven't noticed anything like that with my new SwissChamp or Explorer.

I see the same problem on most if not all newer SAKs. I find that annoying too.

Maybe someone should reach to Victorinox  and find out if this is a thing or not.

Do you guys mean "out of the box" or after pocket carrying it for a while?

My last new SAK was about a couple of months ago and i didn't notice any of that.... Nevertheless all my SAK's eventually develop a dose of magnetism on the key ring from riding in the pocket, after a while.. Even with the older key rings, though with the newer ones it's way faster...

But regarding the Compact, it may be the hole in the key ring holder that's a bit too narrow. I changes the key ring on mine to an older (thinner) key ring.

Out of the box. The hole isn't tight, or too small. I was just looking at it, and even with a lanyard it was sitting out a bit and swinging slightly. Definitely magnetized.

Hummm, now you've made me curious.... When o bought my Compact i actually bought two of them, one is still NIB, untouched. I'm going to check it out to see...

EDIT: Holly crap, you're right. Checked my NIB Compact and it's definitely magnetized. And then it came back to me, the other one was like that too, and i changed to the older key ring for both reasons, the new one being magnetized and the older versions being slightly thinner. Checked my parts box and the original one i put in there is magnetized for sure.
Come to think of if, i think i even mentioned that here on the forum when i got my Compacts a couple of years ago...

2ND EDIT: Yup.... Found it.....

why magnetize the ring? that makes zero sense.

Maybe they had complaints of the keyring rattling around freely or something...
But i guess if it bothers someone that much, it's a much better solution to simply remove it....

Again, I haven't had issues with magnetized keyrings on new SAKs, but apparently it's very easy to magnetize a SAK keyring. I just tried it. I allowed the keyring to merely touch a magnet, and now it's magnetized, but probably only very weakly magnetized.  :dunno:
