Leatherman Surge disassembling nightmare and tools help

Hi to all the Leatherman experts and modders out there...

I was perplexed on the newly manufactured Surge these days. Looks like Leatherman Tool Group is not wanting the end users to fiddle with the tools anymore. Understanding that they improve the tools day to day by making little tweaks to move forward, but I think this is, to us modders, one giant step backward.

Particularly, the large posts that fasten the plier and the outside tools has some tiny changes and it is even very hard to see. It caused some nightmare on taking the new Surge apart. Looks like it has a new stamping pattern on the posts and does not offer much support to unscrew. In the past, a pair of Security (center hole) torx bit T-10 can do this job on the older Surges flawlessly and I modified it a few times. When it comes to the new Surge, it simply do not get enough sidewall support on the same torx bit. So either my Security T-10 bit got bent out of the shape or the socket got stripped beyond hope. By then the only way is to drill out the posts and waste a set of posts.

Is there another bit that Leatherman is using to take this apart? I am sure the Security T-10 is sufficient to screw the post together at the factory when the lock-tite is is still liquidy. But once that has cured, it is impossible to take out the posts scott-free. Is Leatherman playing a trick to us end user? Any idea or suggestion to overcome this?

Ps. the posts on the inside tools end has the same pattern as older Surges and plentiful of sidewall support there... Please see the attached photos

I haven't really messed with a SURGE! Much

I have only used security screwdrivers that are the correct size when taking Waves or Charges apart

Also, if you didn't heat the pivot they are sometimes very hard to break loose from the loctite  :salute:

Let's hope that it is a poorly formed screw and not intentionally manufactured that way.

I hope this isn't hijacking this thread, but how do you recommend heating the pivot?

Hello
I use one of these on the end you are trying to loosen.
It does not take too much to loosen up the locktite.

I use a Bic lighter, 5-10 seconds should do it. Repeat if needed.

I've used with good results a pencil-type soldering iron. :tu:

Looking at OP's photos of the Torx heads, I don't think Leatherman is intentionally trying to make it harder to disassemble their multitools. It looks to me as if the stamping die did a poor job of stamping the Torx shape into the screw head. But it's definitely still a T10 Torx head. I would echo the other commenters and recommend heating the pivots (I used my gas stove last time) before trying to unscrew them. And perhaps a new T10 Torx bit would help.

Thanks for all of the Loctite heating recommendations.  I was about to go total budget and just get a Bic lighter, but I am surprised how inexpensive heat guns cost.

I’ve used both a heat gun and a soldering iron. I prefer the heat gun though. I’m always worried about overheating with the soldering iron.

Bic lighters take too long. This is what I prefer to use:

Seriously, I use a propane torch, but it is really easy to overheat the tool and cause it to discolor. I think that a heat gun is a good choice.

I can't even imagine the epic argument with the wife that would cause if I purchased one of those.

Thanks for everyone’s suggestion to add heat to soften the loctite ahead of losening the posts. I will give that a try.

As for the stamping for the Surge is here to stay. This is not the first Surge that i have seem. They are all recent models. The older are pure Torx profile. The new one has very little support and also seemed to be half of hex on top.

Just to echo how to heat the torx, I use a lighter as well for a few seconds.  Those malformed torx are lame.  I've taken apart a few Surge tools and never encountered what you have.

Somehow i thought this was an isolated case on the plier posts, but it is the new trend for all new Surges, i believe. The older ones are perfect... Perhaps the heat treatment will help release.
