108mm Display Set
on: January 27, 2009, 05:47:34 PM
copied from my post in SOSAK

Some time ago Stressmaster5000 posted this set on my other forum and as soon as I saw it I knew I had to get it.

I'd wanted an old display set like this for a while, but most of the ones that come up are either high priced, beat to heck or filled with current models like the Huntsman, Climber and SwissChamp- great knives, but if I was going to pay out a small fortune, I wanted something special.

I went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth, agonizing over whether or not I should spend the money on this one, which was listed at $200, with a Buy It Now of $300.  It was further complicated by the fact that the seller would only ship to the US.

The good news is, The Cat Man was able to purchase it for me and have it shipped directly to the hotel I was staying in for the SHOW Show, which saved a pile in postage.  Also, everyone else was decent enough to not bid on this, so I think I got it for the tidy sum of $240 with shipping.  No complaints there!

When I got it, the plexiglass was virtually perfect, with only a few minor scratches I can polish out in a few minutes.  The drawback is that the case is also sealed, and the only way to get at the knives inside is to cut or smash it open, which I'd really rather not do.

Of course I got the set to have a set, not to have a bunch more knives, so I was ok with not being able to open it, at least initially.  Upon closer inspection I noticed something wrong that will probably frustrate me until my dying day.

The Stag Hunter, Hunter and Pathfinder all have had their saws closed, either by being jarred in shipping or by the baggage folks on the airline.

Not the end of the world, or so I keep telling myself, but frustrating none the less.

Still, I have six new knives, a leather sheath and a piece of Victorinox history that I can sit and appreciate, and share with my fellow SOSAK members!

All in all, I am very happy with it, and display it proudly, much to my wife's discontent!

There's obviously plenty of life left in the backsprings if they managed to snap the saws shut!

Even so, I have just about all of these knives anyway, so even if I could get at them I doubt I'd carry them anyway.  The only one I don't have is the Stag Hunter and I wouldn't carry that because I hate stag on an EDC knife.

That is amazing. I love the 108mm knives and I got few of them but I still looking for more all the time.
That is pretty good price - I think if you get each knife on its own in this prefect condition they will cost you more :)

What's wrong with stag?

Great set anyway Boss, think how many of these display boxes would have been broken over the years for various reasons.  Nice bit of Victorinox history.

Basically, it requires extra maintenance and isn't that sturdy to begin with.  Stag is a showy material, not a worky material!

But the ones on the Safari Hunter aren't actually Stag.  That way you get all the Staggy goodness without any of the drawbacks.  :D

It sure seems that way.  This sucker is sealed tight.  In fact, I'm sure the air inside is genuine Swiss Alps Air.

I would be proud of something like that as well, and all non sak people who shouldn't be allowed to handle a knife (but for some weird reason are welcome in my home  :P) can't get to them  :D  :tu:

Very nice, Very nice.  I am one of those individuals that doesn't like to spend money even I would have bought that.

So what is the difference between the Adventurer and the Solo (108mm)?
