That's a Yeoman not a Scientist (it's got scissors).  Still a great knife and a very popular one with collectors.  :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

They seem to turn up a bit more often than the scientists but not by that much.

Like the Scientist they're not just popular with collectors, the original Yeoman (not be confused with the BSA Yeoman which is just an Explorer) is another of those really useful tool sets in a small package.  Its one of life's mysteries as to why Victorinox discontinued it.

Ask Bill (scibeer), I believe he's a little busy at the moment but he should be able to sort you out a bit cheaper than I could and he's your side of the water.

In the past I've always politely declined requests to remake discontinued models.  It just didn't seem worthwhile by the time you'd factored in buying the relevant knives to strip and then rebuilding.  Now I'm not so sure.

Perhaps this sale is an anomaly but its hard to tell as they come up for auction so infrequently.  I really didn't expect it to go for any more than £40.

I guess the other reason I've not remade older models is because I don't like the idea of creating something that could be confused by a collector as original.  Perhaps If I used blades with modern tang stamps and smooth corkscrews :)

I've had that worry before.  I haven't yet sold any of my recreations but I have given some away.  I believe that I have always done something that would give it away to a proper collector; wrong magnifier, awl, tang, corkscrew, layer configuration etc.  The problems could arise when people are prepared to spend over £100 ($150) on something that they have only seen in one small picture form e-bay.  :-\

Well this side of the pond a used one went for $75, and one with a box for $100, both were used in not so good conditions zzz.

I've asked Bill a while back, but like you said he is busy and don't have his tools at the moment. If I were building a discontinued model I'd do it just like you said with newer tools not to fool anyone.

You (we) should brand them somehow to avoid confusion.

How easy is it to engrave a SAK blade?

SAK blades will engrave fine, a normal diamond bit works a treat.  Perhaps a more subtle route but no less obvious would just be to initial the liner under the corkscrew.

I really don't want to see the Scientist go the way of the Voyageur (another great tool selection for EDC) where no one dare carry them because of their value :(
