Juice with pliers only?
on: February 01, 2009, 06:02:55 AM
Hey guys, new to MT but I poke around EDC and SOSAK a bit... Was wondering if anyone's modded a Leatherman Juice, and if they could give me any pointers on this mod I've been considering. Basically, I just want a tougher/larger version of the SwissTech micro-pliers. Since I carry a dedicated folder, but I'd like to have a good set of pliers and a few drivers that would fit neatly in my pocket. Seems like I could cut down the size by half if I removed the extra layers. Here's a diagram of what I've been thinking, compared to the original:

I'm assuming the Juice uses chicago screws like the other LMs, so disassebly shouldn't be a problem. So my main questions is, do I need the liners or could I get away with just the scales? Here's some other photos I found that make me think this mod is do-able... is there anything I'm missing or any hidden problems?

Welcome to the forum

Sorry I am not the man to help with this question :-\ I don't know if you can just disassemble a Juice that easy though :(

 Come to think of it I don't believe that anyone has done a major mod on a Juice which included an kind of disassembly :)

If you do I am sure everyone would appreciate to know how it went and some pics of the process would be great :tu:

I could be wrong but I don't think the juice has screws.  Its held together with pins that would need to be drilled out or ground off..     I don't think the outside aluminun covers are strong enough to use without liners.

Hmmm... that's good to know. If I have to use the liners it'd still probably be thin enough to be worth the effort. I just assumed they used the same chicago screws as in the Fuse (saw it here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,8895.0.html) and other LM models. Anyone know for sure?

Here is what the pins look like.

Damn - looks like you're right. You can see the flange on the scales where the rivited head sits  :P  Back to the drawing board.

What about the new LM Freestyle? Looks like you might be able to isolate just the plier layer on that one...

If you do remove the pins on the Juice, you'd have to find something else to replace them...does anyone know if standard Leatherman or SOG pins would work for the reassembly?

The freestyles won't be release for a few months yet so have'nt seen one in person.  The freestyle wont give you the drivers you are wanting.  You could get a skeletool and cut it down to resemble a freestyle and then you would have a driver which excepts Leathermans bits.  That was done by another member. Here is the thread with pics http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,7595.0.html .  I would say the skeletool would be an easier mod than the juice.

The Juice is riveted together. So far no one has done an effective mod.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

I've been considering this.  I have a beaten up S2 sat here at the moment.  The blade is not in great shape and the scissors and opener are totally mucked up.

Its very tempting :)

The pins look tricky to me. Steel sounds a lot harder to peen than the brass on a SAK.
I used to come here a lot.

Too right.  Still its no great loss in its current condition if I mess it up.
