Playing catch up a bit, but need sleep before my covid booster

Day 13

Acid washed boy today, had to take it to the Vic sharpener, it was a little lack lustre when opening a new phone mount for the car.

Nothing much happening here today.
A coworker who knows I love to cook gave me a ziplock of saffron her friend grows; now I just need to figure out what to do with it and how.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.

Soak the saffron in a little oil or white wine.  Add it to Spanish rice.  Make a paella.  Buen provecho!

Day 14 -

A quiet day here today and no blade use required as of this posting.

I did inspect the home yard as colder temps are expected.   Found ONE rose bush fighting back with a fresh set of blooms.

Day 14
Stuck with the Mora Classic No.1 today and used it to cut up some leftover roast beast that I fried up with butter and garlic.
Like the Mora No.1, I never got a chance to get one in the original format, and finally got one when it is re-released.  This and No. 2 are probably some of my favorite Moras.

BLJ posing next to the previously-maligned Buck 120.

The 120 has a narrow blade, so it looks a bit longer than it is. I think.... actual blade length is close to 7 & 3/8" (18.7cm). Very nimble in hand.  :tu:

Day 14

Fell a day behind,,,,

Tonight my daughter is going to the Homecoming Dance at her High School. She wanted some pictures taken at the local park. I noticed her shoes and asked if I could use them for today's picture. Being the cool girl she is,,, after seeing it she asked that I forward her a copy of it.

Is Kydex notorious for scratching blades?

TL;DR answer:  Yes

The rest of the story:

It’s not actually the kydex that scratches the knife, as kydex is softer than knife steel.  However, the extremely tight fit of most kydex sheaths means that a small bit of dirt or a grain of sand that gets in the sheath has a good chance of being held against the blade with enough force to scratch it as it is removed from and returned to the sheath during normal use.  (Quartz, an extremely common mineral, is harder than knife steel.)

In spite of this issue, I personally have a strong preference for kydex over leather sheaths for fixed blades that I carry.  I like that the kydex is impervious to moisture, but most importantly, it is incredibly unlikely that the knife will cut through or penetrate a properly constructed kydex sheath in the event of an accident (e.g. falling on the sheathed knife).

Day 15
I switched back to the Bradford Guardian 3.5.  I wanted to like this knife.  I have liked other knives instantly, but I'm still not sure about this knife.   It didn't feel good in my hand right out of the box and it is awkward to carry because of the extra length of it.  By contrast, both of my ESEEs and my DPX HEST felt great in the hand right out of the box.  Might be I should've tried the shorter guardian 3 instead.  Sometimes a 3 or a 3 & 1/2 finger grip can be more comfortable than a full 4 finger grip. :dunno:

Day 15 -

No cutting till late for prep of a snack.
This little el Morro has been easier to edc than expected. Cuts everything I have attempted without issue and the 420HC has required no additional touchup as well as not biting its owner, yet!

One of the few things that I didn’t like about the ATK was how slick the handle felt.  My other skeloton blades are powder coated and/or paracord wrapped, which helps them feel less slippery.  Because of the sheath.  A full 550 paracord wrap was not going to work on the ATK due to part of the handle going into the sheath, so I decided to try a gutted paracord wrap.  I think it is going to work nicely.

A more pocket friendly carry with this forged kiridashi, wicked tip and a nice medieval feel to it, this one will likely repeat with the alternate custom leather sheath I have for it, but the kydex is more convenient to draw from.

Couldn't carry to my covid booster and groceries, but around the house I went a little more back to basics with this sinew wrapped blade. The wrap is coming loose which is a shame and holds me back from using it more.

Is Kydex notorious for scratching blades? If so, I'll need a contingency plan if I purchase a knife with a Kydex sheath.

It's pretty common for the reasons that Nate mentioned, I will say that not all sheaths do it and not all 'kydex like' sheaths are susceptible to it. I've never had this problem, or think I could have it, with Cold Steel's 'Secure-Ex' sheaths for example.

I've seen some makers put a material like suede inside the sheath before, giving you the utility of kydex but with a guaranteed soft inside that won't scratch up the blade.

Thought blue and orange would look nice in today's pic.

*And no that extention cord is not plugged in. I need it earlier but after reeling it back into the cube thought it would make a good pic.
