A Bit of Rowing.
on: November 27, 2022, 09:29:40 PM
Trying my hand at a new hobby, costal skiff rowing.  (admittedly we're on an in-land bit of water, but we're all just learning ;) )

That looks like fun Gareth  :2tu:

There's an interesting history behind them too.
Inspired by your post I did find this page for example...

It’s a lot of fun. My family and did it a few times in rivers so we were all beginners.

We all have a big laugh each time we talk about it. It felt like we hit every bush and tree branch on the river banks.

Looks fun but I’d probably pass out from trying to keep up, that and with as much back pain as I’m in I’d probably not make it to the boat,, but I’d so go!

Cheers all.  A few aches and pains but not nearly as bad as I thought it might be.  I'm going back on Saturday.  :D

You are a braver man than I!

I have gone in the ocean a few times, but for the most part I try to avoid it!

I am assured that they are extremely stable boats and next to impossible to capsize.  I mostly believe it.  :D

If I'm not mistaken, those look similar to the type of boat we would call a dory here.  They were very popular as small fishing boats and for transporting people and things to places where larger ships couldn't access.

They are very common here, and as you said, very stable.  That having been said, I'll stick to my kayak!

Very much in that family of craft.  In the interest of competitive fairness these St Ayles are made to a very tight set of tolerances (none of which I know  :D).

You can see how she was put together on the project's facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ForfarSkiffProject/photos

So I have stuck with this and have rowed most weekends since November.   :D  We attended our first ever competitive regatta on Saturday and had crews out in the women's, mixed and men's novice races.  A 2km circuit in open water with four or five boats out at any one time.  My crew won our heat (very exciting) but the second heat was quicker so we were only fourth overall.  It'd be interesting to how we would have done up against the other boats in the second heat, but we'll never know.

My photos, so not me in the boats.  :)  Gives you an idea of a race though.

Unless the engine is dead, that's a little too much work for my liking. But you look like you're enjoying yourself! :tu:

I couldn't agree more!

So far I've been unable to get out myself, but I am looking forward to it when I do!

Looks like you have been having a great time Gareth!  I live seeing these photos!

I row my rowing machine in my den but no matter how hard I row I never seem to go anywhere.  :dunno:

maybe if you throw it in the sea and then start rowing?  Must be worth a try anyway.  :D
