MP400 Blade Styles
on: February 19, 2023, 11:47:42 PM
I've been thinking about getting an MP400, and it looks like there's two models (differentiated mainly by blade shape) available. The one I see more often (45500) has a Wharncliffeish shape and serrations that "push out" from the main blade. The other(05500N) has more of a clip point, with serrations that "cut in"

Is this just an old and new model thing? Aside from the obvious, are there any differences between the two models, or a reason I should go for one over the other?

My MP450 (I think mostly a Walmart Exclusive for many years), a 2015 date code, has the Wharncliffe.

My MP400 (no date code) has the drop point.

I'd spring for the drop point. My MP450 was given to me new in box, and it quickly dulled to the straight edge of the Wharncliffe striking the length of the frame. The drop point doesn't seem to have that problem.

It's the same reason I go for my first-gen MP600 (Multi-Lock) over the newer ones. The only blade superior to those two is the big beefy sheepsfoot seen on the Snap On and MP600ST models.

Roberts, my undestanding is that all wharncliffe knives are from the remodeling on, just like the run-of-the-mill-MP 600 series ( this, because the ST and the the Snap On models , like Cody said, have always come with a sturdier knife blade). Remember that the 400 and 600 series share the same internal tools so, I'd guess they've been like that since close to 2008 (IIRMC), when the MP 600 logo got replaced and the tool revised.
