One of these days....
on: February 03, 2009, 03:49:02 PM
.. I'm going to buy a PST that doesn't need taking apart as soon as I get it  :P Yeah right!

This one was in much better condition than the last, but there was still sufficient rust and gunge to make it worthwhile stripping it down. The tools on the left of this pic (e.g. the can opener) are part way through the cleaning process, with the worst of the rust etc removed. The clip point blade and tools near it have yet to be started.

You can see some of the yuk on this one. It's mostly just surface rust, made to look worse by the WD40 that on there. The biggest problem was hardened "gunge" that had built up between the components making them difficult to open and causing scratches. The handles were slight bent too, as though the tool had been dropped at some time in it's life. That was easily sorted though.

The final tool reassembled is virtually pristine so I'm very pleased with this one :tu:

I used to come here a lot.

You really have a knack for these things, maybe I should get into PST restoration. I like to think of PST's as simple but effective, not the first multitool but at least one we can all be proud to call our own. Maybe I will start hunting them down like you, least for you they are UK legal  ;)

I have been doing the same thing however my last 2 that I bought both have broken jaws. The rest of it in great shape just the jaws are bad.

You have done good work on them.

God, you are tempting me.  I have never owned a PST but I think its time I give it some serious thought.

That looks brilliant  :salute:

I think I have striped maybe 6 and 4 of them I put clips on for family or friends. These next 2 I have I will probably clean up and see if I can get the jaws repaced from Leatherman and probably keep stock.

By the picture it appears you just use a couple of the pocket clips to disassemble......is that what you use? I would love to get a set of the dedicated tools for them to do more but it looks as if you are using the basics and coming out with perfection.    :tu:

Nice job! I really love to see restorations.

Reading between the lines, it seems you would not recommend maintaining multitools with WD40 then?

Great job Dave :tu: I love the look of the ole PST

max I believe that Dave was just soaking the gunk off the tools in that pick and the rust was dissolving making it look worse than it really was  at least I think :D

A pair of Kick pocket clips makes a fine set of wrenches for Leatherman repair work :)
