Thanks! It's a pretty knife and I love the tool set. I feel like I need to oil the wooden scales though. It feels dry and the grain is very coarse. I'm almost afraid it could splinter.

:ahhh  that's a worry on a new knife

IMO wax is better than oil for wooden scales.  I've been using something which is mainly beeswax.

I’ll second the beeswax for wooden scales! Interesting looking tool!

I would say oil for the wood and wax for the surface. Danish oil first, and wax when polishing after 1 week

Grohman says to use boiled linseed oil for their rosewood knives, and it does give it a nice "glow". However, I recently bought some Howard Feed-n-wax Polish and Conditioner for my canes/walking sticks which seals them up quite nicely, so I might try that on my wood scaled knives at some point. Of course I'll start with my less than "bragging" knives first...

Not knowing that specific product, I would say you can use wax safely on any knife handle. It´s just a surface treatment and can be removed. Oil will penetrate the wood and start to turn in to resin when drying, and will stay in the wood...

Wonder how the wood scales are attached.

Can they just be popped off and replaced with say some Micarta scales?

I’m thinking the wood scales must be glued/epoxied on.  AFAIK, this is only practical way to attach wood, micarta, aftermarket metal, etc. scales.

Of course, how difficult they would be to remove is going to depend on what and how much adhesive was used.
