Cold Steel Vietnam Tomahawk.
on: February 03, 2009, 11:17:46 PM
Ok so after buying my son a toy Tomahawk (and then buying a second one so we can fight :D) I've decided I've a Tomahawk shaped hole in my life ::)

So I know El Defendo has one, but has anyone else got one, and if so have they had any problems with them, and are they easy to throw (only really thrown knives before) ???

Thanks in advance fella's, and here's the girl in action :)

I have one and love it. very Cheap and easy to work on. You have a platform  that customises easy, and the warrentee works. You could find better, but for the cash not much better. I say go for it and have fun.

HC for some reason I think you may be a chap that knows a thing or two about throwing axes.  ;)  Can you  point out a good "how to" site for some good tips?

Hawk throwing is really not hard. Take the hawk and throw. IF the handle hits take step back if the head hits you are on. One revolution until  you get decent then double the pace to two revolutions. Then you can vary the throw momentum to make up ground in between

Go Heavy or go home. I got to say that with a smile. The heavier the head the harder it sticks. Which is great. Also some say the handle has to be as long as your arm on a table from fingertip to elbow. Hogwash. I a have actually thrown pole axx witha  4 foot handle and got it ot stick.

have to wonder about Lynn Thompson in this video demonstrating the tomohawk with no protective gear on and right in front of hopefully "his office window" where if the 'hawk slips out of his hand and misses the barrel and smashes through the window...?  Also, in that other scene where not all that far from the road and potential human hazard there is this guy probably a worker throwing a hawk against the block with no backstop?  You'd expect better from them wouldn't you?  :)

 :o can you imagine?

Actually Leatherman or Sog would be kind of a neat places to work perhaps.  And there not really all that far
away from where I live so could come back up across the line to visit family and such.

There is serious issues with the sog hawk. It seems it is very prone to handle breakage. It is one I have personally not owned, but have played with and I did like it, However the news about the handle made me shy away fron buying.

Well just like my views on the suspension.(i still loth the thing) I sometimes find what does not work for me will work for some. However I have seen the item in person and would not recomend it. I really cant for the life of me understand how sog let this out to the public. The breakage I stated is not isolated, but very widespread for them to switch out the handle now in production. So maybe the new one isbetter, but it still has issues.

Just a note about the SOG Fusion hawk...the wooden handle is what you want to stay away from.  It has been replaced with a nylon handle on current models.

I was in vietnam an hear about the throwing axe but did not see one, maybe because I was a navy diver an do not go in country to far becuse most of or work ocean side an up river just long as it took to do the job which ended in mostly blowing it up.
