Leatherman Surge Challenge
on: May 18, 2023, 09:58:14 PM
It has been over 4 years since someone did a Surge challenge here at MTO. Apparently I am what they call a late bloomer, because I didn't get a Surge until just over a year ago. Would anybody like to participate in a 30 day challenge starting June 1st? This is at the same time as the Tween Challenge, but if there are SAK participants that would like to join I am sure we can reschedule. :tu:

I love the idea of this, but I can’t really justify carrying a Surge every day in the UK.

Definitely one I’ll be following though, I’m sure there’ll be loads of great pictures.

I'll join you, but it will have to be a few days late.  My current 30 Day Squirt Challenge will run past 30 days because I'll be away from my computer for several days.

I'll bet the Surge feels like a brick after carrying a Squirt for a month.

Cheers Crunchie, that is understandable. Although if you do feel like joining, posting a picture a day would suffice. I have done so in cases where I couldn't carry a knife with me.

Glad to have you following, LoopCutter. Suffered through you say. Was it really that heavy?

Great news, Rich! I don't recall ever doing a challenge without you participating. :salute:

Cheers ~

Glad to have you following, LoopCutter. Suffered through you say. Was it really that heavy?
~

Not the weight, the tool set!

The exchangeable bits, saw/file exchange adapter.    I likely was working maintenance at the Y, heavy on pool service and general repair.
The SuperTool300 or Rebar are my main go to MTs for the tool sets. The flat blades and Philips right there. The saw for cutting pipe, then file for finishing edges.

With the Surge I was swapping bits. And if not. Bits, then saw and file.

I thought the outside access for blades would make up the differences, but I can only say I gave it the full 30 days.  Added the Surge to my camp kitchen box👍 No driving bits needed and saw mounted for bone cutting by and scissors for packaging opening.

Challenges are a great way to learn the tool. Doing it with others better as trucks and hacks are shared.

Always learn something!!!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I don't have a Surge or any hope of getting one before the first of June. (There is a certain traditional that's being offered at a pretty good discount and has "limited availability." Getting one of those is of higher priority.) But I'll be following along.

I would love to join, but I have to travel several days in June. July would be more doable for me if it does get rescheduled.

Now, if I can post a picture a day On days I cannot carry I am in...I carry the Surge often and it is one of my favorite MTs.

That is a valid point LoopCutter, I have similar experiences. :ahhh

Always happy to see you checking in, Farmer.

As far as I know, the only rule is to post a picture for 30 consecutive days MrToolJunkie. So that should be fine. :tu:

Now I could do a Surge challenge as it is my work EDC. However, I am signed up to the "tween" challenge in June.

I could do July (or awlmost any other month)

What could be better than a Surge badge  :dunno:
They don't like it up 'em!

Always appreciated, Poncho

That is my second hint about postponing the challenge. The problem is that I will likely be out of the country most of July. Then there is the Alox challenge in August. My attention span isn't really made to think as far as September, but would that be more suitable? :dunno:

Hosting a CHALLENGE is a challenge on its own!

Some events are assembled months in advance.  And then others are on a whim.  if you want to do it, DO IT!, extending an invite is great and the more that join you, the more fun.   Yet, you can always go solo and accomplish the same result.

I assure you I will follow, someone may just  :whistle:convince me to pick my SURGE up again and give it a try again

I am trying the tween challenge in June, the Dean Memorial in July, attempting a CASE badge. And, the ALOX event beyond that.

   :tu:

Thanks for the advice, LoopCutter and Poncho :hatsoff:

I suppose I'll proceed with June since I have no clue what is going on in my life this fall. Admittedly, halfway through posting this challenge I realized it might be at short notice. But then I figured if you can quit your job with a two-week notice, this would probably be fine. The next time though I will try to think ahead.

Day 01
My one and only Leatherman Surge.  It is a second generation in black oxide (the flash makes it look silver but it is black).  I got it mid-February of this year and carried it through March when the excitement waned and I went back to something a little easier to carry.  I haven't carried it since then because, while it does anything you would want a multitool to do, it is so heavy that it can get uncomfortable on long days.  Also, I hate the MOLLE sheath because of the Velcro.  I wouldn't mind it so much if it had a snap.  I also worry about the blade exchanger for the saw and file being weaker than permanently mounted saws and files such as in the Supertool 300.  Although, I understand there are some pretty awesome saw blades that one can use instead of the one it came with and I might try to get a set of them to try out this month.  Good luck to awl who are participating in this months challenge! :woohoo:
