SAK and Firestarting
on: October 16, 2023, 02:46:24 AM
My 4 yo son and 6 yo daughter are more excited than ever to go hunting with us this season. General rifle season for deer and elk opens next Saturday, and I've been meaning to make some vaseline cotton balls to go in my pack for general and emergency fire starting, so we did that after we got home from the pumpkin patch this afternoon. Once our pumpkins were carved, the kids wanted to try out our firestarter cotton balls and cook hotdogs on the fire. I showed them which sticks we needed to gather sticks ranging from toothpick to wrist size, and we got our piles organized. I brought out my bigger ferro rod for them to try, but they weren't able to make a spark without help. I finally got to try out my new Firefly ferro rod that I got a month or so ago and placed in my trusty Huntsman. One spark from it, and the cotton ball took off as anticipated. We slowly added our sticks as the fire grew, and then they got to enjoy hotdogs cooked on a fire they built themselves. It was a perfect end to a great weekend.

Nice photos.  Looks like you are making regular use of your fire ring location.  Nothing quite as good as a weenie roast.  The kids will remember that the rest of their lives.  Best wishes.  G

@MTSAK  - you are doing it right!  Your kids are growing with skills and memories.

Do they need an honorary Grandpa?  I like weenie roast, smores, trout fishing, and love my grandkids, no problem fitting a few more under the umbrella.  Shucks they may teach me some new skills essential to Montana lifestyles😎
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I remember by Grandfather and Dad teaching me to light fires when I was knee high to a grasshopper.......loved it then and loved it now.......a skill like so many threatened as our world becomes ever more technological, but something I'm sure they will remember all their lives! :like:
