Modding 91mm with alox tools - need advice
on: October 21, 2023, 09:18:53 PM
Hello there SAK users!

Some time ago I became interested in the topic of modifications for SAK knives. I even made one copy as a test before attempting something more difficult.

I would like to make a 91mm SAK with two custom tools taken straight from the 93mm alox - an electrician's blade and a reamer.

I did some digging on the Internet and I think that applying the reamer to the first layer together with a large blade and a corkscrew will not be difficult and very demanding, but the electrician's blade, which must be placed in the last layer together with the bottle opener, will require modifying the spring.

I have a few ideas on how to do it, and I would like to ask you what you think about it, maybe some of you have already done it or know the solution.

The first idea was to use a standard spring from a bottle opener/can opener, the problem with this idea is that the edge of the electrician's blade will be chipped by the spring.

The second idea is to use a standard spring from a bottle opener/can opener, but swap the tool. The springs will need to be slightly modified to make the blade retract a little more, but it can be done. The problem with this idea is that the nail indentations will be on the wrong side, making opening the tools difficult.

And the third idea is to use the spring that is originally located in the layer with the blades. The problem with this idea is that the awl, which should be at the back, will not be possible to open because it will be completely covered by the liners. (I would like to point out that I also tried this idea with the original liners.)  This means that I will have to replace this tool with another one (probably the hook) that doesn't really suit me.

Perhaps one of you has a better idea. Please give me some advice that will help me create my dream multitool ;)

I apologize in advance for any grammatical errors, I'm not from an English-speaking country.

Really nice photos.  They talk about mods on this portion some.  You need to check out The Mod Squad portion.  All sorts of good advice and expertise there.  Welcome to MTo.  Lots of good ideas and friendly people here.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

The reamer on the blade layer is easy as you will
probably know - just need to thin the spacer slightly as the reamer is thicker than the small blade. You can add a bush to the reamer hole to reduce the it to 2.5mm too but some don’t think this is necessary. I haven’t tried the electricians blade but of the three here no2 would be my favourite to try first as taking anything off the working portion of springs I have found can effect tension and/or the height the tools sit. No 2 you have the option to take a bit off the non working spring area and the blade tang if necessary too. There may be other spring/ spacer options that allow it without modification of the spring at all but that will just be a case of experimentation. Like to see pics of the finished project though.

Ye I ordered 0.1mm thick washers a few days ago :D but thanks for the tip, anyway, I appreciate it.
