Spirit X Lock
on: December 15, 2023, 09:24:22 AM
Has anyone ever had the lock up fail on a spirit?  I've seen a couple reports on youtube of people spine whacking the blade and the lock failing.  I don't plan on doing this but I'd just like to know eveyone's experiences before purchase.

I've used a Spirit for years with no lock up issues. Ignore youtube stuff. Use a knife with care and don't rely on a lock.

Thanks for the input.  I tend to over analyze everything and devouring all the info I can get my hands on includes youtube lol.

Not quite sure what spine whacking is - But I can guess -
And it really sounds like something for which you should not be using a multitool blade !!  :pok:

For regular, normal use the Victorinox multitools are awesome

PS. Can I suggest a more explicit title to get better and more responses
In this case for example you could say something like: "Is the Spirit X lock secure?"

I would think if lock is failing it would be cause of spring inside handles breaks or jump off.

Its like mini version of scissor/plier spring on SAKs.
Other reason is that backside tabs would break for using tool as hammer, i have used my Spirit on Comstruction and it had dropped countless times to concrete floor from 1m to 5m height and never it had breaked so far and lock mechanism works fine. I say just get it and use it and if it some reason fails you there is allways excellent Warranty or Service to  use to fix tool.

It won't fail under normal use.

The major lock-based consideration is if your MT gets dirty a lot (and by a lot, I mean really a lot). Even ColdSteels Tri-Ad lock can fail if it is dirty enough (as it cannot properly engage). In that case, I would recommend a Leatherman Wave/Surge as those locks are less problematic with dirt (still you should check proper lock-engagement).
And of course you should check quality control when you get a new MT. Just check if under normal use the lock always engages. This is a rare problem, still pays to check yourself.

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Another factor to consider is, if another implement in the handle is dislodged from its handle close location during the event, that can cause the lock to disengage.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!
