Rustic (rusty?) cooking

    The power has been off 3 times in 5 days.  High winds keep putting tree limbs over the lines somewhere.  I decided if I wanted to eat a hot meal, I would have to dig out my Coleman Propane stove.
    My neighbor got me away from using the old Coleman pump 'em up gas stoves.  He carried a little fold up propane stove in his saddle pack.  One can of propane would cook all anyone wanted.  Slim.  Light.  No fuel sloshing around and spilling on horseback.   My old stove died and I bought a Coleman Propane stove.  And never looked back.

     Haven't used it this year, so things have gotten a little rusty.  I did rinse out the pot.  Some time or other I might clean up the outside.  Stove was a little worse for wear and storage, but fired right up.  I don't usually cook more than one thing outdoors.  Beans, or stew, or hot dogs and chili.  Keep it simple. 
 
    Beans were good.  I got the right amount of salt and pepper in this time.
    I always use the little butane lighters since I discovered them years ago.  I used to buy the Bic lighters, but now I just get the Dollar Tree cheapies.  They last a couple of years.  I use them to light everything pretty much.  Best wishes.  G

Congrats on the badge Gary!  We have a little Coleman stove that we haven't tried out yet.  Need to give it a go.

    I scrubbed the boil over that was on the side of the pot.  For all you clean freaks out there.  A secondary cooking method is a necessity here.  Bad weather knocks out the electrics.  As a matter of fact, power will be off for a while tomorrow and Saturday to let Duke fix some stuff.  Probably have to cook on the thing tomorrow too. 
    You learn how to use one of the folding stoves economically.  Heat up some water for the tea.  Then use the same pot to cook something.  After that you put some water in the pot and heat that up with a daub of soap for cleanup.  The propane stoves are a generation ahead of the old fashioned pump up Coleman rigs. 
    I can't recommend those candle lighters/ long nose butane things highly enough for firing off your stove.  Best wishes.  G

Sorry about your power issues. Hope they've got it sorted by now.  Congratulations on the badge.  I used to have 10 Coleman stoves because I kept buying them at garage sales for as little as $2.00.  I more or less control those urges now.  I have a stack of spare Coleman regulators (model 5430) because a lot of people sold their stoves after they lost that part.  The regulators can also be used to convert the liquid fuel stoves to propane.

   It seems the winds have died down for now, so only one more power outage.  I didn't even know about that one until my compooter ran out of juice.  I think the thing I liked least about the old pump-up gas stoves was storing the fuel.  I keep the propane canisters inside but wouldn't dream of doing that with the liquid.  Best wishes.  G
