MP challenge next month? (And maybe something more specific)

After doing the Rebar and Spirit challenges recently, I thought I'd do one of the MPs next month to round out the big 3. I looked, and I noticed the only Gerber badges we have are a generic MP and Center Drive. Is there enough interest in any specific MP models that we could grab 10 people and get a new badge made? I think I have every "mainline" Gerber model rattling around here, so down to be flexible. If not, similar to my Rebar challenge, happy to just run the generic MP badge and give people a chance to hop on who haven't done it yet, or want to try it again.

Sounds interesting, and something I can do albeit in limited form; I only have 400/600 series models.

Hop in, Jaun! Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Day 0

Handoff from the Rebar I carried last month to an MP 600 Pro Scout. I figure this is the most comparable model to the Rebar, and so it'll probably be my primary carry this month. I'm sure I'll at least get some cameos of the others in there. Off the bat, I notice how much bigger and heavier this thing is, honestly closer to a ST300 than a Rebar. We'll see how much I notice it in pocket.

I don't think the needle nose MP600 is something you're going to want to pocket carry.  The pliers tips will poke through your pockets.  Ask me how I know.  I won't be in this one but I'll be watching.  Good luck to you all.

I agree on both counts.  Lot's of big changes, in a good way, happening here so it's going to be busy for me.

It is not the best carry, but I feel like I have to give it at least a day or two to be fair. I've got a blunt nose 600 that'll swap in at some point.

Thank BP! I'll start off with the bigger of my bladeless, my "Bladed Bladeless":

Day 1

With its relatively short length (shorter than the blade on a 91mm SAK) and partial serrations, the Pro Scout is not a great apple slicer, in addition to being pokey in pocket. Will probably switch it up tomorrow. Side question: Has anyone ever done a blade:handle ratio comparison of multitools? I feel like this is disproportionally short for such a large tool.

I know that feeling BP, and is even more patent in your model with the newer wharncliffe blade; it is somewhat less so in the earlier, drop point ones, as the "belly" adds cutting edge. Sadly, and although larger than a Rebar when deployed, the available space in the handles is the same as the Rebar's  and is compromised by the pliers mechanism. That's how I see it.

Here are some comparison shots: two generations of Pro Scouts (PS), a Rebar and a Supertool 300; newer PS with Rebar; older PS with Rebar; older PS with ST300, and both PS's.

I thought there was some difference (didn't line mine up, but looked a little), but that's substantial. It's a shame, since I like having a wharncliffe, but not enough to lose what looks like about half an inch.

Looking great!  It's surprising how long the MP600 is.  I like it, though, because it gives me more handle to grip.  It's a very tough multitool.

Day 2

MP600 helped with oil and filter change. Missed the longer driver a little, but I do like the pliers.

Day 3

MP800, today's carry, opened a very belated birthday gift for my wife.

I feel like the 800 (and I guess the 700, though I don't have one at the moment) are a really interesting first attempt at a line that could've been great if they'd gotten to a version 3 or 4.

It is, I believe, the first tool to combine all outside opening tools w/ OHO by several years, which I especially appreciate on the sometimes awkward to deploy on other MTs scissors. OTOH, the toolset is a bit weird. No can opener on the 800, and tweezers!? on the 700. The 800 is a big tool, especially with a relatively modest number of implements, while the 700 is undersized. Neither one is undersized, but there's a reason that most companies have more or less coalesced around 4" as their "medium" size. A 750 that sort of squished the best of both together and split the difference could've been a real contender, I think.

Nice looking Leyend, BP; you know, you're right about it being one of the first OHO by leaps, as well as replaceable cutters and saw blade in a butterfly design!  :like:

How do you like the LM adapter on the MP?

I like it very much for its friction fit (which, in my experience, holds better than the magnetic ones from Gerber's or my generic ones), the ability to carry double the bits (double ended ones!) in a slim package, and the adapter itself ends up being just a bit longer than Gerber's or the generic ones that I have.

Day 4

Apparently, this will be "the most" I'll be doing today; the coffee grinder needed maintenance so, the blunt Pro Scout came out .

Day 4

MP400 for the 4th. Got a question for the brain trust on this one. Most of the MPs I have are tight enough to stay open or closed (the handles, not the plier slide), but this one has decent tension closed, but will flop when open. Is there an easy way to adjust that?

If by flopping you mean the handles going side to side, you'll have to take the pliers head out and find a way to repin the handle's rivets; if you mean the tools will be floppy/loose when being deployed, adjust tension at the tool's pivot. On the 400, both screws are on the side (blank/ no branding side; blade/scissors side).

The handles themselves falling from "open" to closed. It does seem to be that center pivot just below the jaws. If I squeeze it a little, the tool stays open.

This one might just turn into a parts/practice tool. I'd like to get into modding, and Gerbers are both cheap and (from what I hear) more mod friendly than LMs. Could mess with this one that's already in less than pristine condition before I try mods on others, or just yank parts out of it. It's got the old school knife blade, so I could yank it out to replace the sheepsfoot in one of my others if nothing else.

That's the best part part of them; easy to disassemble and put back and, if you happen to have an old handle chassis around, you already have two disassembly wrenches!: just need to cut out the side with the four knobs and grind/file around it until they fit comfortably without binding on the lock tab (this same "wrench" will work with Center Drive tool's pivot, as well as 400/600 series; and there are also ready made, good quality wrenches available). You can switch implements/tools between the 400/600 without modifications as well as the Center Drive's tools, and with the 700/800, Diesel, and Suspension with some needing modifications due to size; I'm almost sure you can even sacrifice a side from its short tools and replace with the Center-Drive's pry bar, as all these tools share same pivot diameter.

So, yes, start mod'ding and make it uniquely yours! :tu: :like:
