So this happened... FINALLY
on: April 25, 2024, 02:27:31 PM
After more than a decade of watching and wishing I finally got hold of a Voyageur.  :woohoo:

It's a little rough... okay, it's a lot rough...   alright, alright,  it's a bit of a POS.

But it's a Cap Lifter, Elinox tang stamp VOYAGEUR!!!   and it's MINE!!!

I do have a pair of 84mm scissors that came from a knife with broken backspring and maybe can find a blade to suit.

I have multiple VICTORINOX 84mm blades and at least one VICTORIA blade but I would want to stay with the original tang stamp, and for more than just preserving the value of it.
If I do have an ELINOX blade it will be part of an existing knife.
Will it be worth "robbing Peter to pay Paul"?  We'll have to wait for the postman to bring the answer to that question. :mail:

Until then, all I have is the EvilBay listing pic's to drool over.  :ahhh

Congrats on getting this, I saw it on eBay and forgot to bid, even in the bad condition it’s in a steal for the price

Hope you get to fix it up, I wonder if you could send it to Vic?

what's the cost to get that thing correct ? We know Victorinox won't touch that. Unless it's a DIY it's probably not worth it for what modders want to do stuff.  Just sayin. I hope you can get that back to a nice Voyageur/Tourist for cheap and it becomes worth it.

Remember that 20 dollars Aussie is about 13 dollars US, so our friend got the thing on the cheap.  Scissors are missing half.  Might be able to fix that himself, allowing he can find another pair of scissors to cannibalize and a spring.  Wouldn't even have to disassemble the SAK.  Leave it as it is with just a cleanup and the old thing is interesting anyway.
 Best wishes.  G

Congratulations !    My all-time favorite SAK.    If this were mine I'd either fix it up myself or send it to a pro modder for refurbishment.

Congrats on getting a SAK that is very hard to find.
That will look good once you get the parts sorted.  :tu:  It's always fun to bring a knife back to life.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

  • I'm an Adult?!?! When did that happen?
Well, the $20 Voyageur arrived in the mail today.
As usual I didn't (forgot to) take "before" photos, but  the ones at the beginning of the thread are 100% what I pulled out of the mailbox.

First impression was "not as bad as I was expecting".
What looked like a big patch of corrosion on the back scale was in fact just paint.
There is quite a bit of corrosion pitting on the scales and a lot of small "pocket wear marks". It has definitely been a user.

A series of baths, some gentle work with toothpicks and the application of a little oil later and it was looking much better with the pivots all moving freely and smoothly.

Unscrewed the pivot of the 84mm scissors I have been hoarding for many years and restored the pair on the knife to full functionality. The single sided spring was also transferred.

The blade is not as bad as it looks. I'd say that the tip was snapped off a some point in time and rather than go for the rounded off "butter blade" option the former owner has ground it to a clip point(ish) profile. If I ever come across an ELINOX stamped blade in better condition I might replace it but for now the original gets to stay.
Shield has been touched up with red Sharpie as a bit of lipstick for the beauty shots.

I wouldn't sell it for 10x what it's cost me.

Nice job!  Definitely looks a lot better.  I see what you mean about the blade.  Not my cup of tea but it's a workable blade. :tu:

Great find and very nice cleanup work.  Have you considered regrinding the blade to a more typical SAK shape, even if you might lose a couple of mm on the overall length?

Fantastic fix up, looks amazing. Think the blade profile works fine and although I might consider replacing if I found age appropriate donor there is something about keeping even the original rivets in place that might overrule the urge. Great find.
