Flashlight Challenge - June 2024
on: May 02, 2024, 05:19:08 PM
I've come to appreciate having a dedicated light on me. And we've been seeing all sorts of light innovations lately. Pens, hats, flat flashlight bodies, articulating heads, thousands and thousands of lumens. It never seems to end. :D

June seems to be free. And flashlights seem like a safe carry, compared to knives and pointy things.

Along with flashlights and head-lamps, I think we could carry non-flashlight things with lights on them, and still qualify for a flashlight badge. So, Midnight Managers are fine. Olight pens, LED hats, glasses, probably. But not just our phones.

So, who wants in?

So all kinds of light emitting items but phones would qualify? Also SAKs with light?

I’m still planning to do the Giants of June/Big Blade Challenge in June, though I haven’t yet had anyone else commit to join me.

Perhaps you’ll generate more interest with this.

Yeah, because if you're carrying your phone for the challenge, how would you take a picture of it?
Unless it's all selfies, or if we have two phones.

I have a couple of knives that would qualify, but I'm not risking going outside with a fixed blade for a challenge the way things are down here right now. :(

Sorry it has come to this in your neck of the woods RP.  If you wanted to stick to kitchen/inside shots, that would be an option.  As long as you’re able to have some fun with it.

Just learned about the hanklights but there are so many options for them.  Looking forward getting your thoughts on it.

yes it's so many options it took me a good two weeks of research and hemming and hawing to decide what configuration to order.

it all really boils down to what kind of emitters you like "warm" or "cool" but there are a ton of choices with varying tints and brightnesses. and then there's duel channel for the best of both worlds

the nichia 519a are popular for the warmer tints and the osram W2 emitters are popular for a cooler bright throwy beam.

as far as use case some of his lights could be used as practical tools but many of them are "hot rod lights" meaning they pump out a ton of lumens but will get hot quickly and not sustain the output for very long. kind of making them more of a toy than a tool. there's also some mixed opinions about how durable they are. but i've never owned a hanklight so i'll be sure to report back about how they perform etc.

this as the video that made me realize that i needed a DT8 and a DT8K in my life  :ahhh

My Olight I1R2-EOS is one of the most useful things I own. I awlso own a headlamp (an inexpensive River Store special) that comes in handy. And maybe I need an excuse to finally put some new bulbs in my Mag-Lites. I'll give a little thought to joining in.

There's plenty of time for people to think it over.

This is much more forgiving than a tool challenge, in regards to legality and travelling etc. And it covers all flashlight sizes, and headlamps, and it does not interfere with people's tool edc rotation. And I don't think we've had a flashlight Challenge, other than that one copper flashlight one a while back.  :salute:

I may be able to participate. Sounds fun. I carry an Olight I3T every day.  I should have opportunity to use a new headlamp and several flashlights as we start working on our new house. Should be fun.

One thing I’m keen to learn from folks is how they like any USB rechargeable torches. I chose to go with  the AAA and not rechargeable Olight for price and now I’m wondering if I should’ve invested as I’ve used more batteries than I expected.

Glad to have you! :like:
I don't have any rechargeable torches. I had three Nitecore Tubes, but they don't work anymore. I'm taking a look at the stuff I have, and I've been buying torches the last few years but not really using them, and I want to change that.

Plus, the knife laws are going to get tighter down here, so a torch seemed like something safe to carry.

I love mine.

I switched from primarily AA to primarily USB-rechargeable maybe five years ago or so.  I started with 1x18650 lights, and have moved to 1x21700 for my primary daily carry lights.

I believe that various types of batteries all have their applications, but for a flashlight for an adult that is going to see regular use, the superior energy density of Li-ion means that not only will you save money on batteries, but you will have a light that will be significantly brighter and or longer-lasting.

This'll line up nicely with the plane ride we're taking to a wedding. Anyone want to recommend a good keychain flashlight? The Olight I've been carrying is having some issues, and I assume things have improved somewhat in the last decade or so since I bought it.

The Hank lights are pretty sweet.  Have three - Emissar D4, Noctigen KR1 and Emissar DW4.  The Andruil UI is pretty nice and user friendly.  The biggest thing you usually have to worry about is that they can put off a lot of heat if you use them on higher levels for longer periods.
