Gast Station MRE, Round 3...any interest?

I was signed up for the second Gas Station MRE challenge, but life-blocks forced me to bow out. Now I'm in a little bit better position to attempt it...especially since I have a "different" meal schedule. Nix hosted the second one, but he hasn't been active in over a year and a half. If someone else wants to step in and host it, I'd be okay with that, too.

This is not an official challenge thread; I'm just gauging interest. Is there any?

Merit Badges Participants shall carry and use one Soldier knife, the model of their choosing, for the duration of the 90 days and post a picture each day. Participate  in Challenge thread and post a photo of a Farmer X SAK for thirty (30) consecutive days. Participate  in Challenge thread and post a photo of a Delemont SAK for thirty (30) consecutive days. Must put something in order and provide link to the post. Participate in a Challenge thread, carry at least one black edc item, and post a photo every day for 30 consecutive days.  Carry tools with single functions only. No multi-tools, no multi-layer Swiss Army Knives, no combo one-piece tools and post a photo for thirty (30) consecutive days. All I'd have to worry about now is finding a container suitable to pack everything in. I don't recall what day of the week round two's chow day was. Either some of mine will come to work with me, or I'll see about a hike.

We did Saturday to Saturday, and I'm pretty sure most people just packed them in gallon ziplocks. I'd probably be down.

Agree, on the gallon ziplocs.  That was the standard, although I think the 2nd round I used a dry bag.

   Lots of supplies in western NC now.  I saw a pallet of MREs downtown yesterday.  Sign said, "Take one per family."  I thought..... food.  I eat food.  So, I took one.  Might come in handy if I get snowed in.  Could get some good ideas about how to pack a Gas Station MRE Ersatz Copy?  It could happen.  I took a photo with one of my favorite knives.  Best wishes.  G

Those ones especially tend to be heavy on "regular" or minimally repackaged components. PopTarts, skittles, etc.

    See, I'm getting good suggestions already.  Where is my list.....Pop Tarts.  I went to a yard sale once upon a time and saw a big box full of small OD round tins.  Nut bread, or whatever it's called.  I picked up one.  It had a WW2 date.  The owner said his family had been eating them for years, but finally got tired of them.  He had some school age youngsters.  I wouldn't have been brave enough to even open what at that time was a 40 year old ration. 
    I am looking for some kind of challenge to be a part of for November.  Don't know what that is going to be.  Might be G-Dizzle's MiniChampion thing.  Might not.  Best wishes.  G

November seems to be awfully short notice for the Gas Station MRE challenge. As it's not a 30-day challenge, that shouldn't present a problem if participants are also doing the Combo Edge Challenge, Hiker Challenge, and such. Feasting Day would be on a weekend (largely because a catering company brings a truck loaded with delicious temptations to my garage).

My goal is to go to the Navy Exchange gas station.  They usually have better than usual fair.

The closest Navy Exchange to me is probably in Great Lakes. Selfridge AFB is a little closer, but still difficult to get to.

    Our friend Dan has been going through a load of changes.  I'm not telling tales out of church on him.  He has been quite open about things with his friends here.  With his approval, I would like to suggest a schedule for this Gas Station MRE Challenge. 
    I would be happy to host this challenge with a 'show us what you packed' day of March 2, 2025.  Pack up your home-made MRE entry and post a photo with description of the comments.  Previous challenge hosts have suggested a caloric value be reached for your entries.  Me, I don't care.  If you can live off it for a day, so be it.  Keep a count on calories if that makes you happy. 
    Leave your MRE at room temperature packed up for seven days.  On March 9, 2025 everyone opens their packs and use the contents for that day's food supply.  It goes without saying, that any and all foodstuff should be safe and edible after the seven day waiting period.   Shouldn't be a problem.  That party sized bag of Doritos probably was on the shelf at your local convenience store for months before you bought it, right?   The March 9 finish date requires a photo of crumpled packages and empty cans along with a comment on what you ate and didn't.  Naturally you aren't required to eat everything you packed. 
    Go gourmet, gourmand, or junk food junkie.  According to the previous versions of the challenge, the standard packaging container will be one or two zip-lock plastic bags.  If you have a bag of pretzels, sack of Oreos, and a jar of pickled smoked sausages, you really don't need to pack them in zips.  Be sure to pack something to drink.  Water isn't strictly counted as part of the challenge, but instant drink mix of some sort is good.  If you want to pack a little camp cooker or twig stove to make coffee or heat up something, more power to you.  Napkins, spoons or forks, and gum with a toothbrush would be nice. 
    If things get settled down a little for our friend Dan, he is more than welcome to take over leadership in this challenge.  Failing that, I will start a new thread soon.  March 2 through March 9.  Sign on when I get the new thread up.  All welcome.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)
