Champion with third party logo
on: July 28, 2024, 08:59:21 AM
Hello!

I recently bought  a Champion with the long nail file (based on the toolset etc. I have dated it somewhere 1968-73).

The scales have no Victorinox logo/shield, there is only a third party logo  (SKF) where the shield is normally located.

The SKF logo seems to be a metal insert. Was it common to do this? I don’t think I ever saw this type of third party logo on a Victorinox.

Secondly, I have gotten the impression that this tool (with the long nail file) is fairly sought after, and that I may have made a bit of a bargain.  Or is it mainly the even older ones that are rare? Can anyone comment on this? I paid around 35 USD.

I suppose that a “normal” logo would be more attractive to most buyers. To me, the SKF logo was quite a bonus, as it is my current  employer. I guess the tool must have been bought as a (nice!) give-away for customers at some point.

Swissair put their logo on where the Vic logo goes, so it’s not unknown. Welcome to the forum!

Thank you! I have recently gotten back into the Victorinox world. I had a (modest) collection when I was in my early teens, but that was (hurts to realise) some 20-25 years ago. Many of those tools have since been lost, so I am now trying to replace some of them.

I found pictures of several Swissair versions with logos of the same type as my Champion, some were very nice designs! Thanks for the tip!

Great stuff, Harald - good luck with your search as it’s becoming very difficult to locate older knives here in the UK sadly, and don’t forget to add photos of your knives as everyone loves pics on here! To wit, here’s my Swissair logo-ed knife which dates from 1965 if I’ve interpreted Elinox’s info correctly, which makes it part of my BYSAK stable.

I tried uploading an image previously, but struggled with the file size limitation (posting from my phone). Maybe this works?

The one tool I had and really miss was an old cross Electrician. At the time (~2000)  I bought it “off the shelf”, but I have noticed that they have become quite costly these days. Haven’t decided if I am willing to spend that kind of money…

That is nice!  :like: :like:  Photos need to be under 500k to load for future reference - I remember the frustration before I learned that! I usually pick well under that size to make sure!

Welcome to the forum Harald

- You got a massive bargain for that Champion

And it looks in extraordinarily good condition - So even better bargain

Knife like that could go fo $100 plus on EBay I'd say

PS . Is SKF Swiss Klein French now known as SK Beecham

PPS. And yep - agre with Rizio - Not uncommon to see no Vic logo - And metal inlays are always good -
And some folk prefer to collect the logoed or advertising knives

Nice to hear, I had a feeling that it was a good price. Yes, it is in very good condition, as  far as I can tell it has hardly seen any use. The saw blade has quite distinct exit burrs from the original grinding/milling of the tooth profile, which I believe would have fallen off if it was ever used.

SKF is “Svenska KullagerFabriken” (translates as Swedish Ball Bearing Factory), currently the worlds largest(?) manufacturer of bearings.

My Victorinox addiction keeps getting worse, I just won two auctions for an Alox Soldier from my birth year (1985) and an old cross Technician! Look forward to getting them delivered, there is something special about the old Alox knives.

$35...I wouldn't have been able to hand the money over fast enough. You did exceedingly well! :tu:

A logo in place of the cross is definitely known. (Wenger often put them on the back scale.) I don't see too many with inlaid logos, but then again, very few of my SAKs were made before I was born.
