Hmm... leather scales.  I like that.  I have some pretty beat up scales that would benefit from leather wrapping, seeing as how they have some deep gouges.

Exposed brass rivets you say... hmm.....

I'm sure you could come up with something better than me.  I was thinking about using a single piece of thicker leather for a scale.  Something like you might use for a dog collar.  Naturally you can skive down to any thickness.  So the leather would lie flat, was where I came up with the idea of punching holes in the leather to let the brass rivets show.  Something like contact cement to bond.  The up side could be stamped with a basketweave tool and dyed of course.  Could look okay.  Could look tacky.  Depends on the skill of the worker and maybe some luck.
Talking of wrapping a beat up or broken scale, I have seen labels like a beer bottle or candy wrapper type glued on to regular scales.  It can look really good.  Those types of labels aren't thick, so there wouldn't be any need to sand the old scales down much, if at all.  Best wishes.  G

PS I saw an old Camco Kamp king type knife with leather handles glued on.  It wasn't pretty, but worked okay.  The workman who did it wasn't very good.  I personally had a Western Boy Scout fixed blade that had leather slab handles.  It had a full tang, so these weren't the stacked washer type.  It actually was quite functional.  I must have been crazy to let it go.  G

This poor guy is from a grab bag of knives I recently purchased. The pen blade has been over sharpened on a grinder. The large blade has been expertly sharpened to the point it is as sharp as the spine. I'm going to attempt reviving it.

My attempt at the Crock Sticks didn't work. The angle is off on the "edge".

Sadly it is a late 1980's Tinker that's otherwise in good shape.

Looks like that one has a lot of potential.  Could be you will end up with a very nice old Tinker.  Be sure to let us know how it turns out.  Best wishes.  G

Here's my Sad SAK entry for today, a Cyclist.  Well, maybe half as sad.  But there's still some sadness there.

I like the mini alligator wrench.  If you ever need to adjust an alligator, you should be good.  Sad?  Yeah, duct tape wouldn't do much for that one.  It's a shame how Wenger's new owners just left everyone out in the cold on replacement scales.  They could have made lots of easy money by stockpiling some.  Best wishes.  G

20 minutes with the Work Sharp Field sharpener fixed it right up. This could be my next car knife.

That's true, and exactly why I rarely carry my Wenger. ... Toothpick and tweezers also. I wish Victorinox would have left  Wenger alone, or at least not discontinued the 85mm line.

I went looking for my old faithful SAK on the weekend.....its gorn??????

I have had this knife for over 30 years, its beaten, bashed, bent and scratched in every way possible.
But I have used it almost religiously for any "rough" job going.
But I canna find it.
Where have you gone my friend?
I feel lost without it, its my go to......
I have so many other SAKs but they are all in really good condition, near new in fact.
To use these for the tasks I have used old faithful would be a crime.

I miss my old faithful.
Im saddened by its loss.
Can't even think where I last used it or lost it, it was just "always there" when it was needed....but its GONE.

I haven't given up, I will keep searching, It must be around somewhere.............Where are you my baby???????????

We Sadsakians feel your pain, friend Valkie.  And we have methods to attempt the restoration of your wandering wee knifey to your fold.  Later today we will don our robes and light the fires.  Chant the chants and dance the dance.  Perhaps whatever naughty seat cushion holding your beauty will burp up your beloved SAK.  When it does, make sure you tie a little cord to the precious thing.  There is a reason Carl had his workers put a ring on it.
Best wishes.  Gary

Not a Sad Sak so much. The pen blade is over ground but sharp. Main blade is now sharp. Replaced the missing toothpick and tweezers with green ones so it is back on the active list.

Looks pretty good to me.  I have seen word carvers reshape the pen blades on knives to that same configuration.  Might even be better than it was before.  Best wishes.  Gary

Sad SAK with an equally sad pair of jeans.  I spared you all the holes in these things.  The jeans not the SAK.
Both blades are bent at the tips on the SAK.  That's what blades are for, right?  To pry with.  Also they were sharpened with a file.  I got both into usable condition.  It is an EcoLine, so the scales are nylon with a printed on cross that has long disappeared.  Strange, almost unfinished looking liners.
The worst part about this Spartan was how dirty it was.  All tools were gummed up and the whole thing smelled.  Not just a little.  A hot water bath followed by WD40 and digging out hard black crud with toothpicks restored the snap.  The stench was another matter.
Then I had a brainstorm.  Coffee.  I found some old off-brand coffee and plunged the Spartan in the ground beans for a day.  Big mistake.  The coffee crept down into all the crevices and fouled up all the moving parts.  Plus the stench remained except with a strong coffee smell on top.  Wash again.  Window cleaner.  WD40.  Nothing removed the stink.  Finally I gave it a nice bath in Vitalis.  Yeah, that's the hair oil that old men used to slick their hair with.  That mostly killed the coffee and whatever original scent remained.  Now it just smelled like Vitalis.  Strongly.  I cleaned as much of that off as I could.  Carried it in those dirty jeans a few days.  Aired it.  Finally all the stink is almost gone.
I actually like the knife.  Only EcoLine that I own.  Didn't have a tweezer, but I found one to fill the slot.  Blades sharpened up fine.  Still bent some.  Lots of use left in the old thing.  Just not pretty.  Best wishes.  G

The Vitalis smell has finally mellowed out to a nice, pleasant level.  I have been wondering.  Maybe Vitalis would be good to lube a SAK with?  I always heard it was mostly olive oil with some sort of nice scent added.  The bottle I have is 10 years old or more and never has gummed up.  Best wishes.  G

On Sad SAK Saturday (yesterday), I bought this for $15 plus shipping.  Hoping I can source a new shield.  Unsure if I can get the clock window clean, but it seemed like a fun project.  Not even sure if the electronics work yet.

Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Yes, a Voyager.  Essentially a Climber with electronics & plus scales.
Eager to see it in person.  Thankfully the seller offers a 30 day return as he/she didn't show the tools, so I'm unsure of its total condition.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

The Voyager (Climber with electronic scales) arrived, but the electronics weren't good.  The numbers were only half showing.  The tools were in nice condition, so I did an easy clean and turned it into a nice Climber with Ruby Red Plus scales.  :tu:
The bonus part was when I started a return, the seller refunded me and said to keep it.  That's when I decided to do the clean and scale swap.

I thought of saying if the electronics were no good, it would be worth it to ship it to Victorinox.  Then I thought what I would do, which was just change the scales.  I didn't write that either, because I figured, "No way Lisa would just want another Climber.  She probably has 20 now."
Just the way my convoluted mind thinks.  It made a great Climber with just a scales swap.  Well worth the price you paid.  Even better now after the rebate.  Very pretty.   Best wishes.  G

Thank you G.
It's my understanding that Victorinox doesn't warranty the electronics any longer which is why I didn't send it in.
I have put it into a go bag.  I put new scale tools in it.  I'll keep it, it's fun to have a free one.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.
