Safari (108mm) Sunday!

August 18, 2024, 11:37:09 PM
As awlways, the 108mm series gets overlooked. Here we are, years after they've been discontinued, and they never managed to get a day of the week thread.
There's a lot to love about these knives, for camp, easy to carry, durable, and versatile. It's a shame we'll never get more creative models, I think they fit a nice niche between the traditional 91s and the heavier duty 111s.
A quick rundown for those unfamiliar, the 108mm platform started by request of the German army in the 1970s. All (minus a couple rare exceptions) models feature textures nylon scales with a lanyard hole and a ~3.25" (cutting edge ~2.75") plain edge, spearpoint blade. The civilian versions with red scaled were sold as the Safari series (Safari Trooper, for example, representing the commercial version of the GAK).
On the standard German Army Knife (and most of the descended models) backside tools are a corkscrew and extra stabby awl, most comparable to the ones on the 111mm series (no eye). The trademark tool of the line is a combo tool, which resembles the 91mm version (can opener, bottle opener, screwdriver) mounted on the end of a saw. Some models have a match striker file built into the side of the saw (neither of mine unfortunately). All tools open the same "direction" which is nice.
Beyond that, a few models have fancy scales, or extra blades. Other companies have added other combo tools with hex wrenches, serrated blades, etc. You can still find knockoffs cheaply and easily, with all the varying quality you'd come to expect. Genuine Vic articles have really climbed in price in the last year or so. Even damaged/missing parts (the saw cover) they can often fetch close to $100. Aitor, one of the original manufacturers for the German Army, has embraced the design, and still makes them under their Gran line in decent quality.

A little boid told me I was expected to come to tea. So I obey. A 108mm (I have no other) and a big orange thing. Might as well support a new daily thread. Best wishes. G

I'll post my GAK tomorrow. It looks like it survived multiple wars but it's handy to have.

I have not one 108mm SAK or clone thereof. However, I do think this is a great idea for a new daily thread!

They're a different animal than any other SAK. They're very handy, but the combo saw/ opener blade takes some getting used to. I only have one now, an older Vic GAK. I had a Mauser for awhile. A couple of years ago we had a 120 day Army knife challenge. I carried mine. It's a great camping and hiking knife, but the switch to the 111 was a good move in my opinion.

Did the 108 challenge go through yet? I know there was one proposed.

108 challenge was February, I think. I got the badge in early March.
I feel like the 108s are closer to the 93s than the 111s, despite the fact that they're closer in size to the former. No locks, no OHO, don't feel quite as heavy duty, etc. If I had to guess, the main reason Vic probably got rid of them is that they weren't their design. Once the Bundeswehr stopped ordering them, it may even not have been cost effective (depending on license terms) for them to crank them out.

Thank you both! I thought so. I agree with you on all counts BP. They're a very unique knife, but sure carry friendly!

Let's post another 108 photo. I have already Serrated, Rotated, and done a See Through this morning. Best wishes. G

108 time. Too bad I can't post a Swiza. The only two I have seen lately on the site are a blue one from a European member and the red/orange one that has changed hands recently. I never order anything, and there are none in the stores here, so I guess I will remain Swizaless.
Best wishes. G

Not too many 108s out there, evidently. This is my usual EDC. More or less. Not this month, since I am carrying a Wenger Esquire instead. Delemont challenge and all that. Best wishes. G

My phone doesn't do the fall colors justice. This is the rustic trail which leads to IMR-land. No, I don't rake the leaves. I do pick up the bottles and fast-food wrappers that people deposit. The green 108mm is my rustic Trooper. Best wishes. G

And I awlso have the problem with wayward trash finding its way onto my property. As for fall foliage, there is a tree that deposits many tiny leaves all over the place. Tommy saw them being blown about by the wind and attempted to give chase. Unfortunately, my phone was charging at the time, so I couldn't get a video.
