(First attempt) Alox Minichamp into the Alox Rambler
on: October 06, 2024, 06:29:26 PM
I realized a bit too late (over a decade ::) ) that the Alox Rambler will be my favorite EDC keychain SAK. So what to do? Thanks to some research on this forum as well, I decide to try my luck and make my own.

Luckily the Alox Minichamp is the perfect donor for this project since it has all the tools needed and I can reuse the stock brass rods, since I'm deleting layers and thickness per say. I did a YT video as well, don't know if allowed to post it here, where I documented the whole process.

I only had basic tools (yes, that's a cheese board :D) and overall I'm quite happy with the results since this is my first try. I plan to experiment further and get some proper tools like the center drill bits, peening hammer and the leather strap trick I've seen here. Any other tips and tricks ?  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Nice one!  The peening looks good and sturdy.  Did you have fun doing it?  Great photos.  Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

Looks really good! :tu: I've thought about swapping those spiffy colored Alox scales onto a 58mm with the combo tool.

As for the YouTube link, you did well to err on the side of caution. Grant Lamontagne or SteveC can advise better about the particulars behind that.

Many thanks!
Indeed, since my first topic as well.

Now I'm thinking of a Vagabond build maybe with a different tool instead of the second blade. I mean, since I already have the leftovers from the Minichamp.

Will see what donor ones I can find on Etsy for a good price. Ebay in the UK restricts any sales of saks....

I've thought about such things.

But I couldn't bring myself to take apart one of my MiniChamps.

Really cool mod though.  👍

I know, I lasted one year after purchase until I decided to take apart the minichamp  :D

It's just that I've carried an Alox MiniChamp for a long while now.   Carried a celidor for a long time before that.  Of course I've got a few Ramblers around here too, which have always been my second choice.

Looks nice! I did the same mod back in 2018:

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=78492.0

Did you use another donor knife to get the SD tipped file, or modify the pointy end of the minichamp one?

Oh yes, I on a quick google search, your guide pops out which helped me as well.

I just used the stock minichamp ruller/sd tool. I find it usefull to check the tire threads. I wish they put the ruller on the other side of the nail file/sd.

Ah, gotcha, I didn’t pick up on the ruler the first time.

Yeah, it would be nice if they put the ruler on the file.
