I was aboard USS Lake Champlain between September 2002 and June 2003, and USS Peleliu between June 2003 and August 2006. Much of the time I spent on Lake Champlain was during work-ups.
Bataan was your last command, then? And I sure do like items with integrated cord cutters. They remind me a little of the "V-blade rescue knife" that was carried aboard Peleliu's Captain's gig.
Getting a nice even start on the wrapper before lighting the filler…
By you talking Captain’s gig, I’m guessing you were either a BM or MM?
Day 19This match safe with stormproof matches rides in my fire kit in my hiking pack.It strikes me as funny that someone went to some trouble to produce a water-resistant match safe (screw down top with o-ring), but the striker strip (which isn’t at all water resistant) is mounted on the outside. So the whole thing goes in a Ziploc bag to keep it dry.
Day 20This magnesium bar is in my fire kit as well. I obviously haven’t needed it yet, but being able light a small pile of magnesium shavings if you must have a fire and are struggling is a good option to have.
Day 21Another piece of my fire kit: a Light My Fire firesteel. It’s a good firesteel, but doesn’t get to come out of its Ziploc baggy in the house because of a tendency to get black dust everywhere. Not sure if this is the paint coming off, or the firesteel itself degrading.
New Zippo clone
Cool design on that one. Fuel & burner type?
Day 27Another matchbook, from a somewhat iconic place. Who else has been there?
Day 28Happy Thanksgiving!Something to ponder as you digest your turkey and fixin’s: If we don’t give the children matches, how will they learn to make fires?
Day 29These matches have to be at least 25 years old. They are still good though; I struck one and it burst into flame immediately. Perhaps I should have wet it down first…The matches themselves may be waterproof, but suffer from similar shortcomings to the stormproof matches I showed earlier in the challenge. They are strike on box (not strike anywhere), but the box is cardboard and clearly not going to be waterproof.
