I was aboard USS Lake Champlain between September 2002 and June 2003, and USS Peleliu between June 2003 and August 2006. Much of the time I spent on Lake Champlain was during work-ups.
Then we probably were there together.  I remember a few UNREPs with both ships.

Day 18
A Zippo from another one of the ships I was; one of my favorites and my last

Day 19
A Bic mini in a spool tool.  Mentioned the spool tool earlier.  It is a cord holder that also has a cord cutter and lighter slot.

Bataan was your last command, then? And I sure do like items with integrated cord cutters. :tu: They remind me a little of the "V-blade rescue knife" that was carried aboard Peleliu's Captain's gig.

Day 17

Bernzomatic TS4000 with MAP cylinder

This instant on/off torch is simple to use and highly wind resistant.  It easily lights a cigar, and can light fuel wood for a camp fire directly without the need for tinder or kindling.

The only drawbacks, of course, are the size and weight.  It’s just not practical to carry around on one’s person.

Yes, I was on the Ops onboard for 18 months.  I retired from the BATAAN while she was on deployment in 2014.

By you talking Captain’s gig, I’m guessing you were either a BM or MM?

As long as sharp, v-cutters work good for quickly cutting cord.

Day 19

This match safe with stormproof matches rides in my fire kit in my hiking pack.

It strikes me as funny that someone went to some trouble to produce a water-resistant match safe (screw down top with o-ring), but the striker strip (which isn’t at all water resistant) is mounted on the outside.

So the whole thing goes in a Ziploc bag to keep it dry.

Day 20

This magnesium bar is in my fire kit as well.  I obviously haven’t needed it yet, but being able light a small pile of magnesium shavings if you must have a fire and are struggling is a good option to have.

I never got the proper ways to light cigars or pipes. I just lit 'em, and off I went. Of course, I always considered pipes and cigars to be really big cigarettes.

By you talking Captain’s gig, I’m guessing you were either a BM or MM?
You're sort of correct. I did spend some time in Deck Department...but I was an AD when I left the Navy. Great photos of you in uniform, too! :like:

I have one of those and think it funny as well.  The striker strip is so easily ruined yet on the outside.  I had at one point put some strike anywhere matches in it,.

Day 21

Another piece of my fire kit:  a Light My Fire firesteel.  It’s a good firesteel, but doesn’t get to come out of its Ziploc baggy in the house because of a tendency to get black dust everywhere.  Not sure if this is the paint coming off, or the firesteel itself degrading.

Light My Fire ferro rods are my favorite.  The sparks aren’t as big as some others, but for me they seem easier to make a direct where desired

Day 23

While it fits fairly securely in the sheath, I don’t carry the little ferro rod because:
- I carry ample fire making gear already.
- The rattle of the whistle against the sheath gets annoying.
- My preference is to carry the Fieldcraft inverted.

Day 29

These matches have to be at least 25 years old.  They are still good though; I struck one and it burst into flame immediately.  Perhaps I should have wet it down first…

The matches themselves may be waterproof, but suffer from similar shortcomings to the stormproof matches I showed earlier in the challenge.  They are strike on box (not strike anywhere), but the box is cardboard and clearly not going to be waterproof.
  :dunno:

@Sos24: one of my co-workers was embarked aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt. I know he'd appreciate that Zippo!

@nate j: cut off the striker and place it and the matches in an appropriate waterproof container, I guess. I like the box art!

Day 28

Happy Thanksgiving!

Something to ponder as you digest your turkey and fixin’s:  If we don’t give the children matches, how will they learn to make fires?

It all comes down to teaching children.   Children need to be taught how to safely use matches, lighters, knives, etc; along with the dangers of improper use.  If taught properly and trusted to use under guidance, then they are less likely to improperly use items.  Yet, if children are always taught something is forbidden but never taught more than that, they are more likely to ler curiosity get the better of them and unsafely use.  I loved starting campfires as a child, but because I was taught properly, I respected the danger, didn’t “play” with fire and was always careful.

Too often I think manufacturers don’t fully think items through; like “strike on box” matches are no good if the box gets destroyed from weather.  Ziploc bags are your friend.
