Precious Alox
on: December 08, 2024, 05:20:30 PM
I have stumbled across the Classic SD Precious Alox series. Wow! I might get into a wee bit of trouble.

Anyhow, I did have a question about them. I have noticed several colored alox saks where the color has worn off. Has anyone seen a precious alox version with the color wearing off?

Of the Classics, Alox will wear if attached to key ring and finds itself rubbing shoulders with coins and others of a rough crowd.

I have a Dark Grey Pioneer I used regularly for tasks during installs. When not in use I played on the concrete curbs. After a while, yep the finish showed wear.

I imagine that would be true for and ALOX model. If used, wear will occur.

But, I have no knowledge of the PRECIOUS series 😜

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Only difference is the basketweave pattern.  I would expect normal colored alox wear.  Some people like the looks of a faded and worn scale.  Others don't.  I looked up the cutlery shop that you mentioned.  Looks like they have a nice assortment of temptations and other non-knife related items.  Good place to leave your wallet at home.  Best wishes.  G

Yes, lots of temptations there!

And I'm hoping the precious alox is a little more durable. I carry everything I collect, no safe queens for me. The precious alox is just too gorgeous to ruin. Perhaps a pocket slip ia the answer..

Sometimes I'm fine with a little wear to Alox if the SAK is bought second-hand, but I endeavor to keep those I buy free of wear. A slip would indeed be a great way to go.

With my key chain knives, it is just a given that they are going to get some wear from riding along with the keys.

For other knives, I often carry them either in a dedicated pocket, or in a pocket with only my wallet.  This avoids unnecessary wear and keeps them looking nice much longer…

I do have a couple of Precious Aloxes - I really like them !!!    :climber:   But they are still in their boxes - Although I do plan to use them.

I have an alox (old style) MiniChamp that I sometimes have on keychain - and of course it's gotten a little worn
- I have no reason to doubt that the same would happen to the Precious Alox if so used

Some folk really like the worn Alox - including me   :tu: :tu: :tu:

The me it all boils down to how you want to keep your SAKs - Do you want - a user, or a shelf queen
I get both approaches/requirements ..... and I do have a few shelf queens myself
But I do prefer users - And if you have a user you have to accept that they are going to look like users   :pok:    :salute:

I guess there is possibly a kind of halfway house on users:
IE: To keep the SAK in a slip or pouch if an EDC, or to keep your user on a desk or in a cupboard at home and try and keep it pristine
In this case, for an Alox SAK, the wear and tear will be minimal
........ But to me you should still expect it to get somewhat worn ....... as it is a user!!!    :o    :D

PS.  @Ozark and everyone

Personal beef and request - So please ignore me if I am out of order

Please try and make your thread titles more meaningful and action or question orientated - As opposed to just the name of a SAK/MT
You should get much better responses to your thread and it will really help the forum - eg Historical thread searches etc etc

So in this case you could say: ......
Do the scales on a Precious Alox SAK get worn? .... or maybe ....
Anyone got experience of the wear and tear on Precious Alox scales?

The precious alox series uses the same anodizing as the other alox (I’ve heard claims it’s type II), so it will wear in a similar way.

Personally, I like worn alox and don’t like shelf queens, my 2023 winter magic cadet being the sole exception (for now >:D). I understand how folks would feel differently. Brand new alox does look good. I would find a slip to be too fiddly, personally, but it seems like best t best solution to possess your cake and consume it too.

I'm thinking pocket slip is the way to go, for now. I don't want it getting totally destroyed, but a little wear and tear just comes with carrying and using versus safe queens. I don't have and won't have any safe queens. I carry and use what I collect.

I dont carry anything on my keys. In fact, i don't carry keys. Only the fob for my car. It rides in 5th pocket since it never comes out during the day (push button start, etc.). All of my other locks and doors I encounter during the day are electronic. So, no keys to carry for me. SAK just rides lose in the bottom of the pocket. Sometimes with another knife (probably gonna be an alox bantam soon, which can go in wallet) and sometimes with a bullet space pen, but that is all. So, there may not be much risk if the bantam goes to wallet and bullet pen goes to back pocket. I carry very minimally.

But, I haven't decided for sure to get one. If I do, which color? I like them all...so maybe get them all?

Ughh...

Ya think? I never had any vic's. About a month or so ago I got my first. Classic SD - yellow. Then I got a Spirit X. I have a minichamp on order (with a scale swap scheduled). I put a Bantam Alox on the wishlist for my daughter to know what to get me for Christmas. And now I'm looking at precious alox.  Not to mention the Deluxe Tinkerer and Climber I am considering. I think I need something with white scales too. Oh the madness.....

Sounds like a full-blown case of SAK fever!

The only cure I know of is to continue buying SAKs until the urge subsides.

I got an Alox Bantam to see how I'd like it. The answer: quite a lot. Now I have plans to acquire four safe queens, four carriers, and eight backups. And those are just the ones bearing logos from Knife Center and DLT Trading...

If I get one, I plan to carry with Minichamp. I can't say for sure, since I don't have the bantam or minichamp yet, but I suspect the combo of the two will be my perfect edc....at least that is the plan.

I am moving away from my other knives...I'm just kinda over them all. None of them quite do it for me anymore. I think I will likely become a sak guy...fairly exclusively. So, everything else will probably find a new home....I'm just not looking forward to the process / time involved in selling off a collection.

Depending on how large the collection is, it could indeed be an arduous process. Hope the sale goes well!

So, there is a really, really good chance I will be getting ONE precious alox....for now.

Which color should I start with. Give me your opinions on the color you like best, and why. Also, give me your opinions on the color you like least, and why.

SAK color can be tough to call based solely on stock photos. I find that they almost without exception look better in the hand. Gentle Rose would be my least favorite, as I'm not a fan of pinks and purples. But if you were to let me choose, you'd be getting Hazel Brown. I like the deep and rich look it has, even in the Victorinox stock photo.

I prefer brighter colors, especially if the knife is to be carried; it’s then easier to find if dropped or set down somewhere.  So if I were picking, it would probably be the red, with an honorable mention to the brass gold.

Oops, double post.  But since we’re here, I’ll add that red is such an iconic SAK color, and while gold is timeless and goes with anything.

I love the brown.
The red is a classic.
The grey would blend well with a neck chain if i neck carry.

I know the simple answer is to get all three. But I'm trying to keep my SAK obsession from spiraling out of control.
