The Vagabond and the Princess (and an attempt at the Hacker badge)

I've been so giggly happy with my "Vagabond Plus", that decided to make a second one (with the resulting "Princess Plus", all "Pretty in Pink" as a bonus), and document its progression. It started out with a 2nd-hand Minichamp, with VSS stamping (not- old), and a translucent pink Classic SD with VSSR stamping (older). Here's a picture of the Mini from the listing, as I started right away without taking pictures of it stock.

After initial inspection, the scales were taken out, and deconstruction began:   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Here are some shots of the condition of the scales, and as compared to Vagabond I  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Looks good enough for several Hacker badges to me.  But, they don't let me decide.  Put in your application.  Should be easy.  I see you are using your Dremel.  I couldn't do without mine.  Great pics.  Best wishes.  G

Nice one Juan - Definitely worthy of a badge

And fantastic result - The Vagabond is the best 58mm model - IMHO

Such a shame it's retired - Although then we would not have had your post, and you would have had no badge!!  :o

Hang on ......

What happened to the scissors from the Classic donor?   ???

I guess you preferred to build the Princess as opposed to a Classic (non-SD)?

  • Average Old Guy.
As much as I'm looking for a nice Vagabond, I just can't bring myself to deconstruct a MiniChamp to do it.

Well if I had a set of extra Alox scales I might would have a go.

Anyway,  awesome job on your build and congrats on the badge.

Huntsman, Lisa, Krista, PitCarver; thank you for the kind words! :hatsoff:

Huntsman, since I was only using "what's available resources", each reused their respective brass pins and hence, "one layer short each" (which, was expected for the Vagabond). Also, the original blue Classic SD would "donate" its file/flat driver for the Vagabond and had a broken spring bar (and at the time did not knew that  they all used the same spring bar type and design, all but the one with the keyring holder, but the perches and form is the same among all of them) so,  I was looking into making it a single layer; looking around for one-layer models around SAKWiki for inspiration, the decision was clear to make it a Princess. The "Plus" came from the upcycling of the SD's original scales. The pink Princess came to be as it not only swapped the file but also its blade (a VSSR stamped one)so, it was an exercise into not fully wasting the remaining parts. I'll see what I can do with the two middle liners, cuticle pushers, rules, and spring bars that I now have as spares.

PitCarver, I too was apprehensive at first but, already having an Alox Mini, two Original Minis, two newer Minis, and a Slim Mini, and wanting something slightly slimmer but different (also have Signatures, Ramblers and Managers), it was cheaper (and a lot of fun experimenting) to make the Vagabond, than to buy one (those prices are crazy!); does not hurt as much if it gets lost, misplaced or "miscarried" either. A used Mini can be found quite cheap and, good reference pictures can help a lot.

G, this is so true; it has helped countless times while fabricating small things (like the c-clip for an MP600), modifying, cleaning and /or polishing, even for trunk carving and polishing (used to work bonsais)!
