Looking great everyone!  I have a few joining in.  My first will be this pre 85 Explorer.  I'm waiting for a scissors spring to arrive, but that's no big deal.  This is going to be fun!

Juan you have an amazing lineup for the month!  Thanks for the compliment!  It's an old grooved corkscrew Explorer that I picked up off the Bay for $5.
The only thing missing is the scissors spring, which I ordered today.  It has those wonderful old scales which I shined up a bit.
This Challenge is not based on mag glass use, but I love the thread on Exploring your World with the Mag Glass so much that I'm going to do the month with at least one pic a day from the mag glass.  It's been awhile since my mag glass SAKs have seen use (including the Swisschamps)so I'm excited about this.  Get ready everyone, this is going to be fun!

My fleet of mag glass marvels! Clockwise from the upper left is a 91-92 era Swiss Champ, followed by a black scaled newer Swiss Champ.  Immediately below it is a Yeoman, the Explorer, and an original Woodsman.

Day 0: Just warming up.  The Explorer got a pick with one of my sheepdogs, Ursula.  This is a closeup of her coat, which actually works like Gortex to keep her dry while out droving sheep in England.  She and Art are Old English Sheepdogs.

Day 1

I’ll start the challenge with my tried and true Explorer I’ve had since fall 2022.  This SAK and a Spirit are my go to daily carry.  I have a backup with the sheath I believe I picked up a year later.  My wife also has one, which I gave her at some point the same year after she used mine quite a bit.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

It was most used over the last two years doing some renovations on our last house and our new house.  This thing has seen quite the array of tasks most of which I never get around to documenting here.

I’m going to try for each mag lens model to document the lens like Barry.  Also like Barry, I’ve used the mag lens to identify ticks, particularly nymphs. Most recently my kid had one attached to his neck. Thankfully it was out very quickly from digging itself in.  I thought I’d take a look at our very old hope chest today.

I’m also going to try to discuss the most used and also underrated tools for each model.  For the Explorer it’s certainly the mag lens and awl.  I find the awl very useful for pilot holes and this one has started countless.  The mag lens I find I need more frequently to see fine details my glasses just can’t help with.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Next are the drivers.  The inline Phillips is the most used implement on this model.  It has removed and driven countless screws.  Hard to pickup the wear here but it’s fairly worn.  The large flat head has been very helpful as a pry bar and far exceeds what I think it can take.  It’s been the perfect size for large screws over the years.  The can opener flat head has opened many outlet and switch face plates as well as, well, opening many many cans.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Both blades and the scissors are also very frequently used. I’m sure most of this challenge will have one of these used a day.  I have only had to sharpen the main blade a couple times, which I did very very carefully to keep the original bevel and mostly keep it up with a good stropping.  The tip is a little off.  The small blade needs a touch up.

Some of these things I’ve already said during the Explorer challenge , so it will be nice to compare to my Outdoorsman, Swisschamp, and XLT.

DAY 1

My first SAK was this Victorinox Champion. It was my EDC knife until
the SwissChamp came out. Then I retired it.

I had collected knives since I was 8 years old, but I never saw a
real Swiss Army knife until I was in my 30's. I had not even heard
of Victorinox.

In 1982 I walked into a MacDonald Sales Center and saw this
Victorinox Champion.

I was totally in awe of the quality and number of tools and I bought
it on the spot.

I was hooked on SAKS! :ahhh

When I was growing up I had carried the top Western 901 camper in
the picture for years because of the extra tools, so you can imagine
how amazed I was when I saw all the tools of the Champion.

I was so impressed with the Champion, I ended up being a Victorinox Dealer from 1984 to 2005.

I think I've used the awl as a hole starter for self tapping screws and drilling than for anything else I've used it for.  It's a great tool.

Day 1: A close up of a dandelion.  I love the gray framed mag lenses, but I have to admit the new version has a much larger (and easier to photograph) field of view.
