Vintage Wengerinox ID
on: March 27, 2025, 12:26:09 AM
Hello, I'm having no success identifying a Wengerinox knife.  Using the Wenger tang stamp chart I see that it was made between 1940 and 1952.  However, it doesn't match anything on the SAKWiki.  My knife also has "Abercrombie & Fitch Co" printed on the main blade.  Looking for any help with this.  Here are the specifications:
- 93 mm length
- 2 layer
- Black crossbow Suisse logo
- "Wenger Delemont Swiss made" on the main blade tang
-  Wengerinox crossbow logo on reverse
- Has main blade, small blade, awl, Phillips head screwdriver, can opener, and some kind of pronged cutter

This is actually the can opener.

The tool that more closely resembles the modern Vic opener is a cap lifter/screw driver.  Maybe also intended for stripping wire if it has a sharp edge.

Other than that, I’m afraid I’m not much help.

Hi Welcome to MTo

Lovely old Wenger you have there.
SAKWiki concentrates mainly on the post 1960s SAKs - See this page:
https://www.sakwiki.com/SAKWiki+Structure

However for the older SAKs, we usually (somewhat incorrectly!!) refer to them by their modern name - So yours would be a Canyon
https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Canyon

It has the old style awl and can opener
I think Abercrombie and Fitch was a US store that imported and branded Swiss SAKs

One other interesting point is that Wenger standardised on 85mm pocket knives for their main range - But this happened maybe in the 1960s - So yours precedes that when Wenger made SAKs the same length as Vic
See this page in the Wiki

Very cool!  Great info, thanks.  Appreciate all the help here.  I'll be happy knowing it's a "Canyon"  :D

There is a book on vintage Wengers written by Dave Arnold.  Amazon might still have a copy.

Emphasis mine. You are correct. Abercrombie and Fitch was at one time an outfitter for serious outdoorsy types. The current iteration is vastly different.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is the same.  Once a real sports and outdoors store.  Now pretty much just a glorified clothing store.

Hi @Wengerful,

I looked your knife up in my copy of Dave Arnold's book.  There is a picture of it on page 100 in Chapter 5: Evolution of Officer Knives, 1937-1964.  The only difference between your knife and the one in the book is yours has a bail, but I assume Wenger offered the bail as an option.

I can't find a model number or any other identifying information for it, but some key features appear to be the 3-rivet construction (as opposed to 4), the tweezers, and the standard cap lifter (as opposed to an elongated implement with a wire stripping edge on the end).
