New Compact On The Way
on: April 05, 2025, 04:55:55 PM
As the title says, I have a new Compact on the way. I can't wait!!! $39.00 from the big A. Ordered today, will be delivered tomorrow.

All my SAKs are 58mm except for my Alox Bantam. I have been wanting another larger than 58mm sak. I finally settled on the compact. Not too much tool, but more than my Bantam. When I saw the Compact on sale and with the pending tariffs (DO NOT MAKE THIS A POLITICAL THREAD), I thought it is now or never.

Pics when it arrives.

Nice to see the Compact at a more reasonable price.

There is no one perfect knife//mutlitool but considering its very practical feature set and compact size it's hard to beat the Compact for lighweight* EDC!

The Compact certainly has a lot of capability in two layers.

I had one years ago, but decided at the time that I preferred the opener layer (i.e. Climber).  I think it was the can opener tip Phillips I missed the most.  I ended up giving that Compact to a friend who had a much larger model (Ranger maybe) , but confessed to only really using the scissors.

I couldn’t resist ordering another one at $39 though, so we’ll see…

The Compact has arrived! A little late, but it made it. I'm really liking it so far. One odd thing, no instructions in the box.

No instructions, eh?  I carried a Victorinox that had the combo tool on it.  (The bottle opener looking thing with the screwdriver)  I showed it to a knife dealer one time.  Told him the only thing I didn't like about it was no can opener.  He looked a little puzzled, and said I think it has one but I will check.  The next week he said to use the combo tool as a bottle opener or can opener.  Just hook it to a can and punch through the top.  Then work it backward.  Just the opposite of a Vic can opener.  Some instructions would have helped me then.  I understood the bottle opener part already.  Duh.
He also had a box of green used 108mm knives like my Victorinox.  They were made in Italy, so I figured they were copies.  I wish I had bought one at the time.  Less than $10 each.  The saws were dull and had the sheet metal guard on them.  The saw on mine had no guard and was sharp as a briar.  That finished convincing me they were counterfeit.  Wrong again.
That's a nice looking Compact.  Good price too.  Are you going to carry it a while?  Best wishes.  G

One odd thing, no instructions in the box.

That is a bit odd.  My new Compact (also ordered from the big river site and recently arrived) does have instructions in the box.

Instructions are also available online should anyone need them:

I dont really need the instructions. I just thought it was odd none were in the box. Knife only. Box does not appear to have been opened prior to me opening it.

And yes, I plan on carrying it for a while. I'm gonna give my chunky yellow friend a rest.

Probably gonna be the Compact and rotate in (1 of 3) Sasquatch themed Classics. The red precious alox classic might get some carry time too.

I've got an early Compact - no nail file on the hook. Great collection of tools, but could never adjust to no real Phillips capability so it went into a storage box.   :(

65mm: Wenger Esquire
74mm: Executive (2)
85mm: Traveler, Delemont S10, Bass
91mm: Champion "c", Swiss Champ (4), Explorer (3), Deluxe Tinker, Huntsman, Serrated Spartan/Weekender, Explorer Plus, Deluxe Explorer Plus (mod), Outdoorsman Plus, Champion "a", Champion Plus, Timekeeper Alarm, Golfer

While not needing instructions of course, a dedicated practitioner of the SAK Arts and Sciences nevertheless wants his paperwork to be complete.

Its not that I need the instructions, but rather I need to know why I didn't receive instructions.

1. Did Victorinox change what gets sent with new Compacts?

2. Was there a failure of sorts during packaging at Victorinox?

3. Was this a returned item Amazon passed off as new?

4. Is this a counterfeit?

Just from the excellent photograph, it obviously is a genuine Victorinox.  Could be a return.  If it fits right and opens and shuts correctly, I wouldn't worry about the return part.  Contact Victorinox and see if they will ship you the papers.  In a couple of weeks, a lot of the members here will regret not getting in on the bargain.  Best wishes.  G

1.  I don’t believe so.  As noted above, my Compact purchased at the same time from the same vendor had the instructions with it.

2.  Maybe

3.  Possible, but if the knife otherwise appears new then I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.

4.  I agree with Gary that, based on the pic, it does not appear to be counterfeit.

My vote is that it was either a return or a goof on Victorinox's part. If the seal on the box wasn't broken, the latter is a very safe bet.

Congratulations, and hope you get a lot of good use out of it!

My most recent 91mm SAK, a Deluxe Tinker, didn't come with instructions either. I bought it from Amazon and it certainly seemed like a sealed, genuine SAK. It does say on the box:

"To view our full line, manual, safety and warranty information., visit us at www.swissarmy.com."

So maybe they (only recently) are following other companies by limiting waste.  Heck, my $1000+ phone didn't even come with a charger. They explicitly state it's an environmental thing. [. . . .and like 99% of buyers, I do indeed already own other chargers to use so I'm OK with it.]

I ordered one at this price as well. I like to always keep one on hand. They make great gifts for unexpected birthdays, etc.

No instructions, no big deal. It's just whenever you have expectations, no matter how small, and they aren't met, it tends to cause questions. No big deal though. I feel everything is ok.
