Weird use of your SAK?
on: April 26, 2025, 05:46:46 PM
SAK's- the small pocket size bundle of solutions to many of the little problems life tosses in our way. Some of the uses we put our SAK's to may seem a bit strange, but so is life.

Just recently the spousal unit and I did a three day trip down to San Antonio for just plain R&R. Dining out, walk on the river walk, sight seeing. Great trip, with some small problem that was solved with a small 58mm SAK.

Like a lot of old farts with snoring problems, I sleep with a C-pap machine. It stops my snoring, and I get a better nights sleep with no sleep apnea. So there I am, sleeping away when I keep waking up with a tickling in my nose. I had not trimmed my mustache before the trip and with a C-pap mask covering my nose and mouth, the longer loose hairs kept blowing up and tickling my nose, thus walking me up. So, I find myself at one in the morning in the hotel bathroom, and have to trim the foliage. Problem is, my Braun electric beard and mustache trimer is home in Georgetown about 120 miles up the road.

Soooo, my trusty classic to the rescue. With a thick comb from my wife's purse, I use the little scissors to trim down the 'stache to a shorter level, and go back to sleep with no unscheduled wake-ups. Thanks to the teeny tiny itty bitty scissors from Victorinox.  From experience, I can tell ya the a Sam Elliot mustache don't work with a C-pap machine, but a Tom Sellech/Frank Reagan 'stache works just fine.

What weird uses have you put your SAK to ?????
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Me too Carl, and those scissors have saved me many times when I was sporting a mustache.  I also use the blade to cut open supplies for my trusty CPAP.

I've used cap lifters and the tip of an Executive orange peeler to unlock plastic paper towel and soap dispensers. Maybe not weird, but they get the job done when the proper key is nowhere to be found and the job has to be accomplished quickly.

I've used SAK scissors from 58s, 91s & 93s for nose hairs.  I think this thread is misnamed, I don't find any of this a weird use of a SAK.

Weirdest I can recall is using a pioneer awl as basically a hex wrench to unlock the crash bar style lock at our church. Kind of jammed it in there and it worked.

Lots of great, “weird”, uses!!!

I’ll have to give it some thought. I’ve definitely used some of my SAK tools for “non-standard” uses, but not sure which time to mention here. Haha!!

The fish scaler works great to unlock the automatic paper towel dispensers where I work.  :)

I don’t consider trimming one’s mustache a weird use for SAK scissors.  It’s a common use for mine, and I would say I use SAK scissors for this task more often than not.

Perhaps some of the more unusual uses I’ve had:
- Loosening stuck wing nuts
- Acting as a Torx driver (certain sizes)
- Removing staples
- Opening locked doors

I had locked myself out of the office I had at the time.  It was late and there was no one I could call.  I used the saw on my Huntsman to slide the latch back far enough that the door would open.

Tying a piece of paracord to the key ring and using it as weight to throw the rope over a branch to suspend a tarp.

Kinda "used as intended" but not something you do everyday.

Forgot to pick up a piece of baler twine after cutting it off the sheep's hay. A sheep's legs had gotten tangled up in it, and I quickly deployed the SE/OHO belt cutter blade on my Dual Pro X to safely (blunt tip!) and quickly (Vic serrations rock, plus they use a semi-hawkbill on the OH belt cutter) to cut away a pretty decently wrapped  up amount of twine  to free the sheep.

I have used the fish scaler to skewer olives in a jar.

Works well as a tea bag remover too!

I feel like the fish scaler is used for many things - except perhaps scaling fish! I use it all the time as an all purpose proddy thing.  :tu:

Tried it one time while fishing.  I put the body of my Swisschamp in a plastic bag and used the hook remover.  It worked, but there are easier ways  :D

Day 6: Speaking of Swisschamps, with a green kayak in the background.

I’m not much of a fisherman anyway, but I probably wouldn’t use it for that.  Too difficult to clean…
