End of year Mad Max challenge?
on: June 06, 2025, 05:22:31 PM
Let's get a Mad Max challenge going later this year! I'm booked up through August, but pretty open afterwards. Bring out those 10+ layer monsters! Anyone interested/prefer a particular month?

I think I have one tool with 5 layers.

Can not imagine have a 10 layer or more in a pocket or even a bag.

I will patiently watch this challenge from the comfort of a suite style seating.

Maybe you awl should include a GENERAL SURGEON to join you for discounts if  a hernia may develop!

Be prepared…
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I can only speak for the Wenger Toolchest (a bit smaller than the BIG CHAMPS) but it's surprisingly not that bad. It's become kind of a default, "I don't know what to carry, better carry everything." tool for me.

December sounds good. What's more festive than a giant multitool?

The Wenger Toolchest looks interesting... I'm looking forward to a lot of cool pictures with it!

I can bring the SwissChamp XLT, XXL and the Duke (custom knife with 10 layers and a questionable toolset) to the table.

Custom sounds fun. (Sorry, thought I replied to this already.) And I do enjoy the Toolchest.

Giving this one last bump before we lock in December.

Bumping with a fun fact:

Despite being thicker the S54 and Workchamp XL both have less functions (by Vic's count) than the Swisschamp.

S54: 46mm and 32 functions
Workchamp XL: 41mm and 31 functions
Swisschamp: 33mm and 33 functions.

It's all in those backside/scale tools, which give the Swisschamp all kinds of free real estate. I wonder which SAK has the highest function:size ratio.

Edit: Used "width" instead of "height" from Vic's webiste, corrected thickness.

I'm going to guess the Ranger.  It's almost like a pocket friendly Swiss Champ.

First of all, the Swisschamp is totally pocket friendly!

Awlright, I'm gonna sit here and actually do the research.  For refence, the baseline Swisschamp is 1:1 at 33 functions in 33 millimeters

In theory, the goal here is to maximize multifunction layers (either layers with tools at each end, tools with multiple functions, or layers with a backside tool) and minimize double-wide layers (unless they're also multifunction, then maybe worth it?).

The candidates are:

1. Cybertool L: The bit driver takes up 2 layers, but delivers (by Vic's ever questionable standards) 12 functions. It also comes with the pen, eyeglass driver, etc. if we're counting those. Officially 39 (why was it the Cybertool 41?) functions in 34mm 39:34=1.15 functions per millimeter.

2. Swisschamp XAVT: If one bit driver is good, two should be better. Plus you get all the bonus electronic scale functions. Offically 80:65=1.23

That feels kind of cheating though, so let's look at the more conventional XXL: 73:62=1.18

I suppose the Supertimer would fit somewhere in between, but awlso feels like cheating.

3. Swisschamp XLT: Returning to saner models, the XLT is (IMO) the last semi-reasonable Swisschamp. But I don't think only one bit driver will be enough to handle the competition! 49:43=1.14 (interestingly, the wiki lists it as 50 and 42, which would bump it up to 1.19 and put it in the lead for non electronic models.)

4. Swisschamp XL: Adds 3 tools (pruner blade, pharmaceutical spatula, divot tool) to the base Swisschamp. I think these are all considered single function tools (couldn't find an official function count) which would make it 36 functions. Likewise, no official thickness. Smartknives lists it at a seemingly impossible 62mms. Despite my best attempts to comb third party sites and the Wayback Machine, I was unable to find a number. 36?:x=???

5. WENGER GIANT: A paltry 141 functions in 244 millimeters. Why even bother? 0.57

6. Ranger: Barry's suggestion comes in at a respectable 21:23 or 0.91. CRUSHING THE GIANT KNIFE. I do think he's onto something. The pliers (and maybe mag/driver) layers are dragging down the Swisschamp's efficiency. So let's look at a couple of the other larger "reasonable" knives.

7. Champion+: Removes the pliers and keeps the rest. BUT! Vic actually lists the pliers as two tools, by including the crimper. That means that we have to cut this down to 31 functions on 25mms. 31:28=1.11! The pliers aren't worth it!

8. Champion "a" LNF: This shows the double layer tools aren't worth it. Cutting the driver/mag layer should awlso increase the tool density. However, we're getting a bit into the weeds here, since this wasn't officially issues with the extra pen, mini-driver, and pin. If equipped with modern scales and add-ons, I believe your final function count should be

33(Swisschamp)
-3 (No sewing eye, hook, chisel)
-2 (mag and driver)
+1 (LNF)
=29

Smartknives lists this as 24mm. That seems reasonable, but is unconfirmed.

29:24=1.21!

Final Ranking (assuming third party measurements are accurate):

1. Swisschamp XAVT: 1.23 Hard to lose when you cramp an extra half dozen functions in the scales.
2. Champion a LNF: 1.21 They don't make 'em like they used to...
3. XXL :1.18 The most efficient currently available model.
4. Cybertool L: 1.15 The most efficient reasonable option.
5. XLT: 1.14 One bit driver just can't compete...
6. Champion +: 1.11 I just really like this one.
7. Ranger: 0.93 Not a Champ of any variety.
8. Giant: 0.57 Just embarrassing.
?. Swisschamp XL: I'm guessing this is going to come in below the XLT, but below the +.

BUT WAIT!

Can anything really compete with the ALOX MINICHAMP? At a mere 10mm, it packs in a whopping 15 functions! 1.5! And that's not even including the improved weight and volume.

Why are we even bothering with these smurfin' boat anchors?

But, if I remember correctly it is in storage as I opted for the MOUNTAINEER, for the FILE, without the saw.

I think it's two XXLs and an XLT.

I dunno, every time I see an XL or an XLT I think, "I would actually use that." But the price gets me. The XXL is firmly on team madness.

Awlso, pretty sure I miscalculated last week and the Champ A LNF should be 27 tools (I forgot to drop the pliers), thus dripping it to a respectable, but not exemplary, 1.17 if I did that right.

Giving this a one week to go bump. It's going to be a heavy carry month between this and the Toolbox Challenge on MTO. Something that can be fun on these bigger knives is seeing if you can get through all the tools, and what you used them on. I kept a running list at the bottom of my post of the most interesting use of each tool last time.  On most or all of the knives eligible for this challenge, you'd technically need to do more than one function a day to get them all in. (Usually I just count by the tool instead of micro tracking). We'll awlso be doing some mini-challenges throughout, probably one a week for 4 or 5 total. If anyone has any ideas or wants to host, feel free to drop me a line. I have a couple lined up awlready, but open to ideas.

Read the whole thread and still not sure which tools are fair game for this Challenge.

Anything ten layers plus or is there some kinda formula to determine if a tool is worthy?

There's a list in the first post. If there are any you think should be included that are not, we can take a look. In general, I'd say anything 10 layer should be covered.

Thank you.

Ok so I got it in my head this is a Challenge for 10 layer or more SAKs?

According to SAKWiki the Ranger is only 5 layers which is lame because it is one of my favorite SAKs and any excuse to buy one is ok by me.

Also the Swisschamp is ONLY 8 layers.
