Glad to see you getting back out there, Harley.

Day 1

The Wenger Tool Chest Plus will be my main carry this month. In order to maximize my tools, I'll also take this Alox Swisschamp. Just in case I need a pill spatula or something... You never know.

Nope you pierce them, same for 2 cycle oil.  Reason is you do not want any bits of that seal in your reservoir or tank.  Never try to peel, poke and pour!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I always just cut them.

Harley, if you're going for the badge I believe you need to awlso post a pic today of something larger than the SC. You are, of course, welcome to just ride along.

Day 2

You know, the transparent ruler is actually pretty nice. Looks like we got about 3cm of snow.

Day 02

I prefer the Combo tool to the regular opener on the SC XXL. It works better because it's more centered.

Generally speaking the XXL is a relatively usable tool, its just sometimes too wide....

It's awlso a great for scale changes, which lines up with our first sub challenge: TIPPING THE SCALES!

You have a couple choices for this one, because the pun works more than one way.

1. Change the scales on your giant honkin' Swiss Army Knife. Tell us how it went and why you chose whatever you picked.
2. Show off a creative use of the ever under appreciated scale tools. Surely you Macgyvered and saved the day by fixing the coffee maker at work with the tweezers or something.
3. Show us what other tools you could be EDCing for the same weight as your MAD MAX knife. Bonus points if you use an actual balance style scales to  show how they line up (just taking a picture of the measurement on your shop/kitchen scale is okay, I guess...)

Let's schedule it for Monday the 8th to give the weekend to play with it.

Day 3

Speaking of scale tools, I awlways miss the toothpick when I have to go SAKless for a challenge. I think I cannibalized a cheap Wenger knife off ebay to get the tweezers and toothpick for this knife.

Day 4

Home sick, so no use. Look at this absolute unit dwarfing the puny Swisschamp!

I've said before that I don't actually find the TC+ particularly onerous to carry. I think the lack of backside tools helps with this, compared to the bumpy Swisschamp. Weight is a difference of about 33 grams (about an 18% increase). The reduced length awlso helps. With some generous rounding (actually squaring) to make the math easy we get a volume of approximately 78078 cubic millimeters (or 0.078 cubic liters) for the SC and 88400 cubic millimeters (0.088) for the TC+, barely a 10% increase of space in the pocket. For all that, the Swisschamp actually has more functions despite being smaller, but the Toolchest is still fun to carry.

First of all, the Swisschamp is totally pocket friendly!

Awlright, I'm gonna sit here and actually do the research.  For refence, the baseline Swisschamp is 1:1 at 33 functions in 33 millimeters

In theory, the goal here is to maximize multifunction layers (either layers with tools at each end, tools with multiple functions, or layers with a backside tool) and minimize double-wide layers (unless they're also multifunction, then maybe worth it?).

The candidates are:

1. Cybertool L: The bit driver takes up 2 layers, but delivers (by Vic's ever questionable standards) 12 functions. It also comes with the pen, eyeglass driver, etc. if we're counting those. Officially 39 (why was it the Cybertool 41?) functions in 34mm 39:34=1.15 functions per millimeter.

2. Swisschamp XAVT: If one bit driver is good, two should be better. Plus you get all the bonus electronic scale functions. Offically 80:65=1.23

That feels kind of cheating though, so let's look at the more conventional XXL: 73:62=1.18

I suppose the Supertimer would fit somewhere in between, but awlso feels like cheating.

3. Swisschamp XLT: Returning to saner models, the XLT is (IMO) the last semi-reasonable Swisschamp. But I don't think only one bit driver will be enough to handle the competition! 49:43=1.14 (interestingly, the wiki lists it as 50 and 42, which would bump it up to 1.19 and put it in the lead for non electronic models.)

4. Swisschamp XL: Adds 3 tools (pruner blade, pharmaceutical spatula, divot tool) to the base Swisschamp. I think these are all considered single function tools (couldn't find an official function count) which would make it 36 functions. Likewise, no official thickness. Smartknives lists it at a seemingly impossible 62mms. Despite my best attempts to comb third party sites and the Wayback Machine, I was unable to find a number. 36?:x=???

5. WENGER GIANT: A paltry 141 functions in 244 millimeters. Why even bother? 0.57

6. Ranger: Barry's suggestion comes in at a respectable 21:23 or 0.91. CRUSHING THE GIANT KNIFE. I do think he's onto something. The pliers (and maybe mag/driver) layers are dragging down the Swisschamp's efficiency. So let's look at a couple of the other larger "reasonable" knives.

7. Champion+: Removes the pliers and keeps the rest. BUT! Vic actually lists the pliers as two tools, by including the crimper. That means that we have to cut this down to 31 functions on 25mms. 31:28=1.11! The pliers aren't worth it!

8. Champion "a" LNF: This shows the double layer tools aren't worth it. Cutting the driver/mag layer should awlso increase the tool density. However, we're getting a bit into the weeds here, since this wasn't officially issues with the extra pen, mini-driver, and pin. If equipped with modern scales and add-ons, I believe your final function count should be

33(Swisschamp)
-3 (No sewing eye, hook, chisel)
-2 (mag and driver)
+1 (LNF)
=29

Smartknives lists this as 24mm. That seems reasonable, but is unconfirmed.

29:24=1.21!

Final Ranking (assuming third party measurements are accurate):

1. Swisschamp XAVT: 1.23 Hard to lose when you cramp an extra half dozen functions in the scales.
2. Champion a LNF: 1.21 They don't make 'em like they used to...
3. XXL :1.18 The most efficient currently available model.
4. Cybertool L: 1.15 The most efficient reasonable option.
5. XLT: 1.14 One bit driver just can't compete...
6. Champion +: 1.11 I just really like this one.
7. Ranger: 0.93 Not a Champ of any variety.
8. Giant: 0.57 Just embarrassing.
?. Swisschamp XL: I'm guessing this is going to come in below the XLT, but below the +.

BUT WAIT!

Can anything really compete with the ALOX MINICHAMP? At a mere 10mm, it packs in a whopping 15 functions! 1.5! And that's not even including the improved weight and volume.

Why are we even bothering with these smurfin' boat anchors?
That is a lot of research and number crunching there.
