Oh, and I think I damaged my watch tool somehow... I heard a snap when I twisted it to pop the Work Champ scale off...

Well, that is frustrating.

However, unless there is a piece of something physically preventing the scales from seating, I would have to think the proper application of heat and pressure would close up that gap.

Measure the height of the rivet and the depth of the pocket in the scale.  Could be bottoming out before it seats.  Best wishes.  G

I have no idea what's wrong with it, to be honest. I actually attempted to remove the scale, scrape out whatever was possibly blocking it from seating, and then re-attach it, and that didn't seem to do anything either. There is exactly one more of these 111mm Stay Glows that I can potentially get to try this again — at the risk of Julia possibly leaving me, but hey, at least I'll be able to find my Work Champ in the dark .

I'm editing this to add: I almost wish I'd asked someone else to put the Stay Glows on, seeing as how they were pretty pricey and now it looks like I'm going to need to get that other set of them...

Could be just the way the photo was positioned, but it looks like the liner might be bent in a fraction.  Might not be the scale at all.  Best wishes.  G

I think that that was the issue with the Serrated Spartan. With this one I don't think the frame is bent; I think it's just the angle the photo was taken. I actually just double-checked it to be sure because it did, for a second, look like the frame was bent. But it doesn't appear to be. I have another WC that I dropped the first week I got it. That one has a bent frame now. I'm actually a little bit put off by how easily the frames on these 111s bend — I would've thought that for a larger, more rugged model the frames would be commensurately tough/rugged. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm considering just putting up an ad asking for someone to do the corkscrew side re-scale on here if I manage to get that other pair... I'm not experienced enough yet with the scale changes to be comfortable with replacing a second ~$30 scale...

Iirc, someone got out the calipers and found that the 93s are actually thicker stock than the 111s. Truly Sturdy Boys.

I don't know that I've ever seen someone swap in non cellidor scales. I wouldn't think the process would change, but who knows?  :dunno:

I wonder if the ideal temperature for a scale swap for nylon isn’t actually higher than for cellidor?

Tuisto I guess you could just glue them on now.

Reinier, I tried to remove the backside scale (that didn't quite seat properly) and I couldn't quite figure out what to do to retry it (whether that meant using a small Vic blade to scrape out the inside of the receiving bit of the scale, etc. So, I removed the backside scale and then scraped out a bit of the stuff inside the holes and then scrubbed it with a teethbrush (clean) and then tried putting it back on. I don't know what I managed to do wrong but all that to say that I don't think I'd even be able to glue it on and have it seated properly.

I wonder if the ideal temperature for a scale swap for nylon isn’t actually higher than for cellidor?

So, the second time I put on the backside Stay Glow scale I actually just dumped it in full on 70°C water and then put it on. I didn't want to try to go hotter. But that also didn't quite seem to do the trick, unfortunately. The frontside scale went on without a hitch. There was a second or two where I was nervous because it kinda looked like the backside one, i.e. looked warped such that it would also not seat correctly, but after a bunch of clamping it seemed to work fine.

Here are some things I think may have caused the problem:

Bent frame (low likelihood)
Scales/SAK not soaked in hot water long enough (highest probability, I think)
Bent/warped backside scale (also low likelihood, IMO, as the scales were brand-new and not cannibalised from a Rescue Tool)
Uneven pressure applied to different parts of scale when seating (very high probability — if this is something that can cause this type of seating issue)
Scale was not seated lightly before clamping down (med-high probability — I can't remember whether I did this with the backside scale but I definitely did it with the frontside)

I think I may try it one more time (perhaps with a different Work Champ, although my other Work Champ is the one I dropped and bent the frame, so... maybe just a different model entirely? Maybe my OH Parachutist?)

I've never swapped a 111, but I have done a few 91s without issue and never been to careful about "even pressure" so I'd rate this one unlikely.

Instead of starting a new thread, I hope you do not mind me tagging this small project along.

First off I found a seller with one set of the NAVY CAMO scales.  Ordered a set.
These are not the PLUS style.

While on the way I found a SPARTAN with advertising scales. Very reasonable. Made the purchase. The SPARTAN arrived last week, and most surpriced the knife showed no signs of wear😀

The scales on the other hand took the slow train and every switch back trail before arriving SATURDAY.

IN PICTURES, the objects.

This will be big brother to a classic I have😉

Thank you GENTLEMEN  :hatsoff:

For some weird reason my mind fooled me to think that the NAVY CAMO, had a blueish tint.  Instead there is no BLUE at awl

I dunno…some of the greys look sort of bluish grey to me…

I second that blue-grey sentiment.  I think it depends on the light  it's viewed under.

I really question the reality of your observations.

I chastised the scales seller, for the fact there was no blue hue or tint.   I expected blue.  My mind told me that photograph describing the scales had a blue tint.

They reminded me that they never mentioned blue color. Only that these were NAVY CAMO scale.

Navy is the key word, navy can describe a color.

I did revise my feedback🫣
